Trump’s Global Chaos: Might Makes Right?
Donald Trump's actions, from challenging international law to embracing a Christ-like image, are reshaping the global order. This shift towards 'might makes right' creates instability and emboldens adversaries, while figures like the Pope warn of a loss of human dignity and justice.
Trump’s Global Chaos: Might Makes Right?
The world order established after World War II aimed for rules and stability. But recently, actions by Donald Trump seem to be tearing that down. Instead of promoting democracy and shared values, Trump’s approach appears to be based on pure power, leading to global uncertainty and potential conflict.
A World of Force, Not Law
One major concern is the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. This move seems to ignore international law and could give Iran permission to seize ships. It creates a dangerous situation where might truly makes right. If any country can block vital waterways just because it has the power, then no one is safe. Imagine Malaysia demanding cash for ships passing through its waters, or Turkey doing the same for the Bosphorus Strait. This isn’t the kind of world we want to live in, where bullying and force dictate everything.
This escalates tensions significantly. Stopping ships, whether they belong to China or NATO allies, risks accidentally starting a war with major powers. The goal should be to de-escalate, not to create more chances for conflict. This approach also emboldens countries like Iran, making them feel they can disrupt the global economy if they choose to. This creates a ripple effect that will last long after Trump is out of office.
Status Quo vs. Revisionist Powers
There’s a theory about countries being either “status quo” or “revisionist.” Status quo countries are happy with the current world order and benefit from it. Revisionist countries want to change or overturn the system. The United States, after World War II, helped build a system that largely benefited it. While not perfect, it promoted trade and alliances, like NATO, which strengthened America’s position.
Trump, however, seems to believe the U.S. is a revisionist power that needs to shake things up. This is a flawed idea. When you’re already at the top, trying to change things can only lead to falling lower. It’s like having a strong house and trying to rebuild the foundation – you risk making it unstable. The U.S. benefited greatly from international cooperation, free trade, and diplomacy. Trump’s actions have damaged that.
The Pope’s Concerns and Trump’s Reaction
Even the Pope has spoken out, calling for wars to be fought justly, with human dignity and international law in mind. He found Trump’s suggestion to end the war in Ukraine unacceptable. Trump’s response was to call the Pope weak on crime, a bizarre and personal attack. This shows a lack of respect for established institutions and moral leadership.
Adding to this, Trump posted images of himself depicted in a Christ-like manner. This was met with criticism, even from some of his own supporters, who saw it as blasphemous and an example of excessive Christian nationalism. It highlights a massive ego and a detachment from reality, especially when combined with his aggressive rhetoric and actions on the global stage. This behavior suggests a leader who is increasingly isolated and out of touch.
Reshaping the Global Order: Extraction, Not Transaction
Some describe Trump as transactional, but his approach is more like extraction. He takes and squeezes others, rather than engaging in fair deals. If a superpower acts this way, it gives other countries the green light to do the same. This is how China and Russia gain influence. They argue the U.S. is unstable and hypocritical. Trump’s actions validate these criticisms.
International polls even show that some parts of the world now favor Chinese leadership over American leadership. This is alarming, especially considering China’s authoritarian model. Trump’s focus on short-term wins, even if they are losses, gives adversaries an advantage. The U.S. is seen as unpredictable, making other nations hesitant to rely on it. This instability allows rivals to gain ground.
The “Mad King” and the Erosion of Guardrails
This behavior is often described as that of a “mad king.” The idea is that a leader, surrounded by people who only agree with him, loses touch with reality. He believes he is more popular and powerful than he is, leading to increasingly erratic decisions. This is seen in the way Trump posts inflammatory messages without apparent concern for consequences. His actions, like threatening to wipe out entire civilizations and then posting Jesus memes, show a disturbing lack of judgment.
In his first term, there were some checks and balances. Now, it seems those guardrails are gone. Whoever is posting these messages for him is not stopping him. This is the result of surrounding himself with sycophants who bolster his ego rather than challenge him. Lacking internal character, he unleashes impulses that harm the nation and the world. He appears desperate, perhaps fearing legal repercussions and political defeat, leading to increasingly wild behavior.
The Rise of Media Grifters
Interestingly, some figures who previously supported Trump are now speaking out against his Christ-like imagery. People like Megyn Kelly and Alex Jones have voiced criticism. However, this is not necessarily a sign of genuine change. Many of these individuals are seen as “media grifters” – people who say what they need to say to gain an audience and make money. They don’t have strong values; they follow the money.
Figures like Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens, despite sometimes sounding reasonable, are part of this system. Carlson has a history of spreading misinformation and aligning with anti-Western stances. Owens, who initially criticized Trump, later became a strong supporter, likely due to financial incentives. Many Black conservatives, in particular, find significant financial backing within the right-wing media ecosystem when they align with Trump. This ecosystem is flooded with money, making it more lucrative than independent or liberal media.
A System Built on Profit, Not Principles
Candace Owens, for example, knows firsthand what racism feels like but makes more money by claiming systemic racism is a lie. Similarly, Tucker Carlson promoted election fraud theories while privately doubting them. These individuals say things publicly that benefit them financially, even if it contradicts their lived experiences or beliefs. They are essentially selling a narrative to a growing audience that is expanding their reach.
The situation with Iran and the Strait of Hormuz is escalating again. Hopes for a peaceful resolution after JD Vance’s visit have faded. It appears Donald Trump is pushing for further escalation, rather than seeking an off-ramp that benefits everyone. This continued focus on conflict and power over diplomacy is a dangerous path for global stability.
