Suspect Charged in Molotov Attack on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s Home
A 20-year-old man has been federally charged with a Molotov cocktail attack on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's San Francisco home. Daniel Moreno Gama allegedly traveled from Texas with intent to harm Altman and the AI company, facing charges including attempted murder and arson. The incident has prompted calls for a calmer public discourse on artificial intelligence.
Suspect Charged in San Francisco Attack on OpenAI CEO
Federal charges have been filed against a 20-year-old man accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at the San Francisco home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The suspect, identified as Daniel Moreno Gama, allegedly traveled from Texas with the intent to target Altman and the artificial intelligence company. Surveillance photos captured the moment the suspect is accused of throwing the incendiary device, which caused a fire at Altman’s residence.
‘Planned, Targeted, and Extremely Serious’ Attack
Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s San Francisco Field Office, Matt Coobo, emphasized the deliberate nature of the attack. “This was not spontaneous. This was planned, targeted, and extremely serious,” Coobo stated during a press conference. The FBI highlighted their role in coordinating across multiple jurisdictions and executing a search warrant at the suspect’s residence in Spring, Texas. “The FBI is committed to protecting our nation’s innovation leaders and the companies that drive our economy forward,” Coobo added, vowing to pursue individuals who travel to carry out acts of violence.
Charges Detail Attempted Murder and Arson
San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins outlined the extensive charges filed against Daniel Moreno Gama. These include attempted murder for targeting Sam Altman and a security guard at his home, with enhancements for using a deadly weapon. Charges also cover attempted arson of the home, possession of a destructive device, and exploding a device with intent to murder. For the incident at OpenAI headquarters, where the suspect allegedly attempted to break glass doors and threatened to burn down the building, charges include attempted criminal threats and possession of an incendiary device with intent to commit arson.
“This conduct is being taken seriously. We interpret this behavior for just what it is, an attempt on Mr. Altman’s life and an extreme danger to those around him and those who work for his company.” – District Attorney Brooke Jenkins
Broader Implications of AI Debate
District Attorney Jenkins also called for reflection on the rhetoric surrounding artificial intelligence. “This should also be a moment where our nation reflects on the often incendiary rhetoric that is being used in discussions about artificial intelligence and its future impacts on our society,” she said. Jenkins urged for a de-escalation of heated discussions and a focus on healthy dialogue and solutions to protect the workforce and society.
Federal Charges and Domestic Terrorism Potential
U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California, Craig Mascarenas, confirmed the federal charges filed against Gama. These include possession of an unregistered firearm and damage and destruction of property by means of explosives. Mascarenas noted that the investigation is ongoing and that if evidence shows the attacks were intended to change public policy or coerce officials, the case could be treated as an act of domestic terrorism. “We will not tolerate the individuals coming into our areas of responsibility to carry out acts of violence,” he asserted.
Separate Incident Under Investigation
Authorities also addressed a separate shooting incident that occurred early Sunday morning in the same Russian Hill area. While officers arrested two individuals, Amanda Tom and Muhammad Hussein, for negligent discharge of a firearm and seized three firearms, they currently have no evidence linking this incident to the attack on Sam Altman’s home. Both cases remain active investigations.
Looking Ahead: Vigilance and Partnership
Law enforcement officials emphasized the strength of partnerships between local, state, and federal agencies in responding to and investigating such incidents. They pledged to remain vigilant and use all available tools to prevent violence and protect the city. The swift actions taken in this case serve as a warning that violent acts targeting innovation leaders and companies will be met with a strong, unified response.
