Congressmen Resign Amid Allegations, Trump Feud Grows
Two congressmen, Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzalez, resigned amid serious allegations. President Trump faced backlash for a controversial AI image and escalated his feud with Pope Francis. Meanwhile, the US imposed a partial blockade on Iran, and the OpenAI CEO's home was attacked.
Swalwell and Gonzalez Resign Amid Allegations
Two members of Congress announced their resignations Monday following serious allegations. Congressman Eric Swalwell, a prominent Democrat, is stepping down from the House of Representatives. This comes as multiple women have come forward with accusations of sexual misconduct and assault.
Swalwell stated he would take responsibility for some mistakes but denied others. He had previously withdrawn from his bid for California Governor due to backlash. While his resignation ends a potential House Ethics Committee investigation, a criminal investigation is reportedly underway in New York concerning one of the alleged incidents.
NBC News confirmed one accuser worked in Swalwell’s office from 2019 to 2021. She told The San Francisco Chronicle that Swalwell sexually assaulted her twice while she was too intoxicated to consent. NBC News has not independently verified these specific allegations.
In a separate development, Republican Congressman Tony Gonzalez of Texas also announced his resignation. He faced allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a staffer who later died by suicide. Gonzalez was also under scrutiny from the House Ethics Committee.
The departures of both a Democrat and a Republican in such close succession do not change the narrow majority held by either party in the House of Representatives.
Trump’s Controversial AI Image Sparks Feud with Pope
President Trump is facing criticism for posting and later deleting an AI-generated image that depicted him as a Christ-like figure. Trump claimed the image was meant to show him as a Red Cross worker, not in a religious context.
The White House has not commented on why the image was removed. However, the Archbishop of Miami suggested Trump recognized he had gone too far. The post sparked swift backlash online, with some critics calling it a mockery of God.
This incident occurs amid an escalating dispute between Trump and Pope Francis. The Pope had recently called for peace regarding the war in Iran. Trump responded by calling the Pope “terrible for foreign policy” and a “very liberal person.”.
Pope Francis, speaking aboard his papal plane, stated he had no fear. Bishop Robert Barron, a Catholic and member of Trump’s religious liberty commission, suggested Trump owes the Pope an apology. However, Vice President JD Vance later stated that Trump took the image down because he realized many people did not understand his humor.
US Imposes Partial Blockade on Iran Amid Peace Talk Collapse
President Trump has ordered a partial blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, preventing ships from reaching or leaving Iran. This action follows the collapse of peace talks between the US and Iran over the weekend.
Iran has condemned the blockade as an act of piracy. The US military has positioned warships near the strait, a critical route for about 20% of the world’s oil. The strategy appears similar to actions taken against alleged drug traffickers.
According to US Central Command, the blockade specifically targets Iranian ships and those loading or unloading in Iran. The goal is to pressure Iran and halt its oil exports, which are a major source of revenue, primarily for Asian markets.
Shipping data showed the strait largely empty, with some vessels turning back. Oil prices rose and the stock market dropped when the blockade took effect. However, markets rallied after President Trump hinted at new negotiations with Iran.
US intelligence suggests China may soon provide Iran with new air defense systems. The blockade directly impacts China, a significant buyer of Iranian oil, and comes ahead of President Trump’s scheduled visit to China next month.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s Home Attacked

The 20-year-old suspect allegedly traveled from Texas to California. He is now charged with attempted murder and possession of a deadly weapon. According to the criminal complaint, Gama also went to OpenAI’s San Francisco headquarters, where he threatened to burn it down and kill anyone inside.
Altman, who leads a major artificial intelligence company, posted an image of his family, hoping it might deter future attacks. Investigators found a document on Gama espousing anti-AI views and opposing executives in the field.
