Senator Defends Judgment Amid Friend’s Scandal
Senator Krysten Sinema held a press conference to address rumors linking her to Congressman Eric Swalwell's scandal. She admitted her close friendship "clouded her judgment" and that Swalwell lied to her, but maintained she had no knowledge of his alleged predatory behavior. Sinema expressed belief in the women who have come forward and called for greater accountability within Congress.
Senator Addresses Rumors, Friendship with Swalwell
Senator Krysten Sinema held a press conference today to address rumors and allegations circulating about her relationship with Congressman Eric Swalwell. Sinema stated she called the conference to clarify her position and counter what she called “lies” and “smears” against her and her family. She emphasized that while she deeply regrets her past friendship with Swalwell, which she admits clouded her judgment, she had no knowledge of any predatory behavior or sexual assault.
Friendship Clouded Judgment, Senator Admits
Sinema described her relationship with Swalwell as very close, extending beyond politics to a deep family friendship. Their children attended baseball camp together, and their families shared meals. “Our friendship clouded my judgment, and I was wrong. I deeply, deeply regret that,” Sinema stated. She explained that Swalwell, whom she considered a best friend and trusted to watch her children, lied to her and manipulated her sentiment, especially after her own difficult campaigns where she faced similar smear tactics.
Swalwell Lied, Senator Claims
The Senator asserted that Eric Swalwell lied to many people, including those in positions of power within the U.S. government. She noted that he was trusted with sensitive roles on committees like Judiciary and Intelligence, and was involved in impeaching Donald Trump. Sinema revealed that when rumors began to surface a few weeks prior, she asked Swalwell directly, and he lied to her. She recounted calling him the day she read an article in the San Francisco Chronicle, urging him to drop out of his political race. “I told him, ‘It’s time to drop out,'” she said, adding that Swalwell denied everything at the time.
Believes Women, Deserves Justice
When questioned about the allegations against Swalwell, Sinema firmly stated, “I believe the women 100% and they deserve justice.” She clarified that while she had no knowledge of predatory behavior or sexual assault, she acknowledged hearing rumors in Washington D.C. for years, though they were often vague and related to flirtatious behavior. She explained that her family’s close relationship with Swalwell and his wife made it difficult to believe more serious accusations. “When you see people in power… putting him in these very sensitive positions… you just don’t believe,” she said.
Addressing Doubts and Future Ambitions
Sinema acknowledged that some people might find it hard to believe she didn’t know about the allegations, especially given her past involvement in his presidential campaign and close friendship. She directly refuted claims of ever being roommates with Swalwell. Regarding future political ambitions, she stated her immediate focus is on stopping the lies and protecting her family’s reputation. “Presidential, anything else like that? I don’t care. We’re going to wait… The most important thing is I want to protect my family,” she said.
Calls for Accountability and Systemic Change
The Senator also touched upon the broader implications of the scandal, particularly concerning the Congressional Accountability Act of 2018, passed in response to the Me Too movement. She suggested that the fact Swalwell could rise so far indicates potential weaknesses in the system or a failure to create an environment where staffers feel safe to report misconduct. Sinema called for stronger, independent accountability measures, suggesting the need for an external organization where staffers can report issues without fear of repercussions. She also pointed to the culture in Washington D.C., where members of Congress socializing with staff can create problematic situations. “It is his fault. It is the fault of people like him who have power and abuse it,” she stated.
No Friendship Left
When asked about the future of her friendship with Swalwell, Sinema was unequivocal. “There is no friendship,” she declared. She stated she has not spoken to him since telling him to resign and has no plans to communicate further. She believes that when someone is willing to lie to their family, friends, and constituents, there is no basis for a continued relationship.
Looking Ahead
Sinema concluded by reiterating her commitment to transparency and her regret over the situation. She plans to work with Senate leadership to explore ways to improve accountability for staffers and ensure a safer environment within Congress. The focus remains on addressing the personal attacks against her family while also advocating for systemic changes to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future.
