“Things have changed in the last few years. You feel it. You can feel it on the street.

You see it on the streets. People are getting shouted at. Small kids are getting beaten up here.

Couples are flying off. It’s became very very very sad here. And unfortunately, I have kids here and it’s not so safe as it used to be.”

Younger members of the community also describe feeling targeted. While walking to school or visiting friends, they face aggressive confrontations. Even simple acts like walking down the street can become a deeply uncomfortable experience, especially after dark.

“You know, I’m minding my own business. I’m walking on the streets but are going to school or going to a friend and there’s just people walking on me starting screaming like stuff that I don’t particularly want to repeat.

And I normally tend to just walk off and kind of move on. But it’s still a very uncomfortable experience, especially if it’s in the dark.”

New Wave of Anti-Semitism Linked to Global Events

Jewish sites and institutions with Israeli connections have long required police protection in many European nations. This is due to ongoing hostility towards Jewish people. However, the current surge in anti-Semitism is being linked to the Israeli government’s policies concerning Gaza and Iran.

Community leaders emphasize that the connection between global events and local Jewish communities is often misunderstood. They explain that the non-Jewish world sometimes views Israel and Jewish identity as identical, which is not always accurate.

“I believe that the not-Jewish world sees Israel and Jewish as one and that’s not necessarily the case.”

Antwerp: A Historic Jewish Hub Faces New Challenges

The Belgian city of Antwerp boasts a Jewish community with roots stretching back centuries. It is one of the largest in Europe today, with a significant population of Orthodox Jews. The city is even nicknamed the “Jerusalem of the North” for its vibrant Jewish life.

Israel’s National Security Council has issued warnings to Jewish communities abroad. They are advised to be extra cautious and avoid attending Passover celebrations at venues that are not secured. This guidance reflects the serious nature of the current security situation.
