MrBeast Faces Lawsuit Over Discrimination and Retaliation Claims
YouTube star MrBeast, Jimmy Donaldson, is being sued by former employee Lorraine Mavromatis. She alleges discrimination, retaliation, and being forced to work during maternity leave. The company denies the claims, stating they have evidence to refute them and calling the lawsuit opportunistic.
MrBeast Sued by Former Employee Alleging Discrimination
YouTube superstar MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, is facing a federal lawsuit filed by a former employee. Lorraine Mavromatis claims she experienced discrimination and retaliation during her time at Donaldson’s companies.
The lawsuit, filed in North Carolina, alleges Mavromatis was forced to work while on maternity leave and was fired shortly after returning to her job. She was reportedly told she was too qualified for her role.
Mavromatis, who spoke exclusively to NBC News, stated, “I do not want to be silenced anymore. I really want to use my voice.” She started working for Donaldson’s company in 2022 and claims she advanced quickly.
However, after raising concerns about sexual harassment, she was demoted. The lawsuit describes her new division as a place where “careers go to die.”
Company Denies Allegations, Cites Evidence
A spokesperson for MrBeast’s companies responded strongly to the lawsuit. They stated that Mavromatis’s position was eliminated due to a company restructuring. The spokesperson called the complaint a “clout chasing” lawsuit built on “deliberate misrepresentations and categorically false statements.” They added that the company possesses “receipts to prove it.”
The company’s statement highlighted extensive evidence, including messages from Slack and WhatsApp, company documents, and witness testimony. This evidence, they claim, “unequivocally refutes her claims.” They also stated they would not yield to lawyers seeking to create a financial payout. The company aims to prove the allegations are false and opportunistic.
Maternity Leave and Work Demands
The lawsuit also details allegations regarding Mavromatis’s maternity leave. It claims she was contacted to work during this period and was not given proper notice of her rights under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Mavromatis stated that she feared retaliation if she refused to work while on leave.
She claims she was on a work conference call while in labor. She traveled to Brazil for a video shoot with soccer star Neymar just weeks after giving birth.
“No mother would want to leave their newborn baby behind to go to work, especially out of the country,” Mavromatis said. “When you’re breastfeeding your baby, that’s the last thing that I want it to do.”
Conflicting Accounts of Employee Handbook and Travel
NBC News reviewed documents showing Mavromatis’s signature on an employee handbook dated four days before she gave birth. This handbook outlined the company’s maternity leave policies.
Mavromatis, however, stated she does not recall signing the document or being informed of her rights. “No, I do not recall signing and I was never informed of my rights,” she told NBC News.
A message reviewed by NBC News appears to show Mavromatis expressing willingness to travel to Brazil for a shoot. She wrote that she felt it would be valuable to go to ensure things worked smoothly. She also inquired about a seat on a private jet.
Mavromatis explained her perspective, saying, “In my mind, I had to be there. I didn’t have a choice.” When asked about a seat on the jet for comfort post-partum, she was told there was no room, leading her to fly commercially.
MrBeast’s Business Expansion Amidst Legal Issues
The legal challenges come as MrBeast continues to expand his business empire. He has ventured into food, toys, philanthropy, and is exploring cryptocurrency.
Donaldson recently spoke about his company’s culture, noting its evolution over time. “It’s obviously evolved over the lifetime of the company,” he stated.
Donaldson, who now employs around 750 people, added that he has brought in more experienced individuals. His brand, built on viral YouTube content, now faces serious questions about alleged behind-the-scenes practices. This lawsuit highlights potential issues within the company’s operations.
Past Legal Action Against MrBeast
This is not the first time MrBeast’s companies have faced legal scrutiny. In 2024, he was sued over his Amazon show “Biz Games.” The lawsuit, a class-action filed by five former contestants, alleged he created an unsafe environment. That suit is still ongoing, with MrBeast and his team denying all accusations.
Despite the ongoing lawsuit, Amazon renewed “Biz Games” for a second season. Regarding Lorraine Mavromatis’s current lawsuit, she expressed fear in speaking out against someone as powerful as Jimmy Donaldson.
However, her legal team is reportedly determined to pursue the case. Mavromatis maintains she does not remember signing the FMLA handbook and was not informed of her rights.
