US Must Rebuild Government Power to Meet Future Challenges
The United States must rebuild its government's capacity to build essential projects like housing and infrastructure. This effort is crucial to address affordability crises and counter the perception of government ineffectiveness. A focus on a positive agenda, rather than just criticism, is needed for the nation's future.
US Must Rebuild Government Power to Meet Future Challenges
As Donald Trump’s influence wanes, the United States faces a crucial moment to rethink its government’s ability to act. A key idea gaining attention is the “abundance movement.” This movement, started by Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson, focuses on strengthening the American government’s capacity to build things again.
This includes addressing major needs like housing and infrastructure. These public projects could significantly help with the high cost of living for everyday Americans.
For many years, the U.S. has seen its government’s ability to get things done decline. This is most obvious in its struggle to build new projects.
We have a large gap in maintaining our current roads, bridges, and public systems. We also lag in building new things, such as high-speed trains.
Several factors have led to this decline in government power. One major cause is the many rules and limits we place on ourselves.
Legal expert Nick Bagley calls this the “procedure fetish.” Since the 1960s, according to social scientist Mark Dunkelman, the U.S. has shifted towards a “Jeffersonian mindset.” In this view, government is seen as a threat to freedom. Dunkelman argues for a return to a “Hamiltonian perspective.” This view, named after founding father Alexander Hamilton, sees government as a tool for positive change and progress.
Young people with technical skills are often hesitant to work for the government. This is partly because the government’s ability to act is seen as limited. Many public services and projects have been given to private companies.
These contractors may have their own goals, and the government often struggles to oversee their work effectively. Having a clear, positive plan is essential for overcoming the current problems facing American democracy.
Donald Trump’s presidency has been marked by a disregard for democratic values and a lack of empathy. His authoritarian approach partly grew from a feeling that the government was ineffective. People believed a strong leader was needed to get results.
However, these promised results often did not appear. Simply criticizing such a leader is not enough to overcome their impact.
For Democrats to regain power, they must clearly explain their positive plans. They need to show how the country will improve in the next five to ten years. The abundance agenda is not about favoring corporations or the wealthy.
Instead, it aims for goals like making housing more affordable and tackling climate change. The recent success of the Artemis 2 mission, with its crew orbiting the moon, is a source of national pride. However, such achievements should be seen as collective successes for the entire country, not just the projects of a few individuals.
Recovering the government’s ability to act is a goal that all Americans should support. This initiative seeks to restore faith in government’s potential to deliver public goods and improve citizens’ lives. Future discussions will explore the challenges in putting the abundance agenda into action.
The recovery of state capacity is something that all of us should own. I’m going to be talking more about the obstacles to implementing the abundance agenda in a series of coming videos.
I hope you will enjoy this one and future ones. Thanks very much for listening.
