Manhattan DA Launches Probe into Rep. Eric Swalwell’s Sexual Assault Allegations
New York, NY – The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has opened an investigation into sexual assault allegations against U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell. This development follows initial reports detailing accusations made by a former staffer, which Swalwell has vehemently denied.
Former Staffer Details Allegations
A former staffer claims she was sexually assaulted by Representative Swalwell on two separate occasions. These allegations were first brought to light by the San Francisco Chronicle and later detailed by CNN. The news outlet also reported on accounts from three other women alleging various forms of sexual misconduct by the California congressman.
MSNOW has spoken with the former staffer at the center of these claims. She alleges that the assaults occurred in 2019 and again in 2024. In addition to her firsthand account, this news organization has reviewed text messages and medical records related to her allegations.
One medical record from a practitioner reportedly stated, “You are a strong survivor, stay strong.” Text messages reviewed by MSNOW, sent in April 2024—the same month as one of the alleged assaults—show the accuser confiding in a friend about the events she claims transpired. These documents provide further context to the former staffer’s allegations.
Swalwell Denies All Claims
Representative Eric Swalwell, who is also a leading candidate for California governor, has strongly refuted the accusations. In a video posted on social media, he stated, “These allegations of sexual assault are flat false. They’re absolutely false.
They did not happen. They have never happened.” He added, “And I will fight them with everything that I have.”
Swalwell emphasized his long public service record. “For over 20 years, I have served the public as a city councilman, as a member of Congress, and as a prosecutor who went to court on behalf of victims, particularly on behalf of sexual assault victims,” he said. “That’s who I am and have always been.” His legal counsel has also reportedly sent a cease and desist letter to the accuser.
DA’s Investigation and Its Reach
The Manhattan District Attorney’s decision to investigate indicates a serious response to the allegations. However, it remains unclear whether the investigation focuses on the 2019 incident, the 2024 incident, or both. The DA’s office has not specified the location where the alleged events took place, leading to questions about why the Manhattan DA is involved.
The office has publicly stated that they are conducting an investigation and are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward. This probe adds a significant legal dimension to the ongoing controversy surrounding Representative Swalwell. The accuser has alleged incidents occurred in both 2019 and 2024.
Political Ramifications Unfold
The allegations have already begun to impact Swalwell’s political career. As the front-runner in the California gubernatorial race, the accusations have led to a swift loss of endorsements.
Key allies on Capitol Hill have withdrawn their support since the story first broke. This political fallout is occurring just before a crucial election.
Swalwell has indicated he plans to spend the weekend with his family. It is currently unknown how he will address these developments concerning both his gubernatorial campaign and his congressional seat. The situation remains fluid, with potential updates expected.
