Rep. Crow Slams Iran War as ‘Disaster,’ Criticizes Trump Admin’s Lack of Plan
Rep. Jason Crow, an Afghanistan and Iraq veteran, has declared the ongoing military engagement in Iran an "unmitigated disaster." He criticized the Trump administration for lacking a clear strategy and for allegedly initiating the conflict without proper congressional approval based on an imminent threat. Crow also addressed the Democratic Party's need to reconnect with working-class voters.
War in Iran Deemed ‘Unmitigated Disaster’ by Congressman Crow
Democratic Congressman Jason Crow of Colorado, an Afghanistan and Iraq war veteran, has strongly criticized the ongoing military engagement with Iran, labeling it an “unmitigated disaster.” Speaking on Capitol Hill, Crow argued that the Trump administration lacks a clear strategy for ending the conflict, which he contends began without a necessary congressional approval based on an imminent threat. The war is nearing the 60-day mark, a point at which congressional authorization is typically required for sustained military action.
Constitutional Concerns and Cost of Conflict
Crow pointed out that congressional approval should have been sought from the outset, as no imminent threat from Iran was ever demonstrated. He stated that the administration has since abandoned attempts to prove such a threat existed.
The conflict, now approaching 60 days, has already incurred significant costs. According to Crow, approximately $100 billion has been spent, and 13 U.S. service members have died, with over 300 wounded.
Deteriorating Security and Geopolitical Impact
The congressman detailed the negative consequences of the military actions, noting that the Strait of Hormuz is now mined. He also stated that Iran has increased its control over the vital waterway and the oil flowing through the Persian Gulf.
The conflict has led to the rise of a more extreme and hard-line supreme leader in Iran than was in power previously. These developments paint a grim picture of the military campaign’s outcomes.
Tucker Carlson’s Apology and Crow’s Reaction
The war has caused divisions even within conservative circles. Former Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson, once a supporter of President Trump, has become a vocal critic of the war.
Carlson issued an apology for misleading his audience, acknowledging his indirect role in the current situation. He expressed remorse for not recognizing the dangers sooner and for supporting policies that led to the conflict.
Congressman Crow shared a mixed reaction to Carlson’s apology. While acknowledging the sentiment, Crow felt it was “too little, too late.” He highlighted the numerous warning signs about the president’s conduct and national security decisions over the years. Crow recalled his role in the first impeachment trial, where President Trump was accused of extorting a foreign leader using U.S. national security aid.
A Call for Bipartisan Action
Despite his criticisms, Crow extended an invitation for others to join the effort to push back against what he described as a “runaway presidency” and a dangerous war. He believes it is never too late for individuals and political factions to do the right thing. He welcomed potential allies, including those who may have previously supported the administration, into a coalition aimed at safeguarding the nation’s economy, American lives, and international security.
Rebuilding Trust with Working-Class Voters
Shifting focus, Crow addressed the Democratic Party’s challenges in connecting with voters, particularly in rural and working-class areas. He acknowledged that the party has a long road ahead to regain trust after decades of perceived neglect. Crow, who hails from and served with people from these communities, emphasized that these voters feel disrespected and unheard.
Strategies for Re-engagement
Crow explained that Democrats have sometimes stopped visiting or actively engaging with these areas, leading to a disconnect. He uses platforms like Fox News to reach audiences who might not otherwise hear the Democratic message. The congressman stressed the need for a long-term project involving showing up, making a case for the party’s platform, and actively listening to people’s concerns.
Recruiting Servant Leaders for the Future
In the interim, Crow is focused on recruiting strong, independent candidates who are committed to public service. These candidates, while Democrats, are running to be leaders and servant leaders for the next generation. Their goal is to spark a movement that can overcome the divisions caused by the MAGA movement and the nation’s current vitriol, moving the country forward.
