Louisiana Father Kills 7 Children in Horrific Shooting

A community in Shreveport, Louisiana, is reeling after a horrific act of violence early Sunday morning. Shamar Elkins, an Army veteran, is accused of fatally shooting seven of his own children and another child.

The victims ranged in age from one to 14 years old. Police are still working to understand the full motive behind the killings, but they have confirmed the incident is domestic in nature.

According to law enforcement, the violence began at a different location before moving to the Shreveport residence. One woman was shot at a separate site, and it is believed the other woman was also shot there. The mother of the children fled the scene of the shootings to an adjacent house and called 911 from there.

The 13-year-old boy also fled the residence. Following the shootings, Elkins stole a car at gunpoint from an individual down the road. Police located the stolen vehicle and pursued Elkins into Bojer Parish, where the chase ended.

Police have activated a peer support unit to help officers cope with the trauma of responding to such a catastrophic event. “Anytime that we have anything that’s you know catastrophic like this or something that’s you know obviously going to going to have some elements that officers are going to have lasting effects on,” an official stated, “we have a peer unit.” The investigation is focused on piecing together the events that led to the tragedy and providing answers to the community and the victims’ families.
