This technique, reminiscent of early photographic practices, presented a significant technical challenge.

Unlike modern digital photography where individual shots can be easily combined in post-processing, shooting on film is unforgiving. Each exposure occupies a specific frame on the film roll, and advancing the film after each shot would prevent the creation of a composite on a single frame. Destin needed a special camera capable of taking multiple exposures without advancing the film, a feature not commonly found in contemporary cameras.

After an extensive search, a solution was found with the help of friends at a camera store in Finland, who recommended the Mamiya RZ67 Pro. This medium format camera, with its specific capabilities, allowed Destin to meticulously plan and execute a series of 11 exposures on one frame of Ektachrome color positive film. The exposures were timed precisely using Dr. Telepun’s calculations, capturing the partial phases with a solar filter and then the totality without.

The Eclipse Experience and the Unidentified Object

The eclipse viewing party, held in Jackson, Missouri, was a family affair, with Destin’s family and Dr. Telepun joining to witness the astronomical event. The day was filled with educational activities for children, the eerie atmospheric changes preceding totality, and the spectacular phenomenon itself. As the moon began to obscure the sun, Destin prepared his Mamiya RZ67, locking it down to ensure stability for the crucial sequence of shots.

During the final moments of totality and the subsequent emergence of the sun, the camera captured the usual phenomena, including the diamond ring effect and the reappearance of sunlight. However, upon reviewing the 4K video footage from a separate camera set up for general recording, Destin noticed something unusual. A small, fast-moving object appeared on the right side of the frame, just as the diamond ring effect was visible, and a second, similar object was observed crossing the solar disk shortly after.

Investigating the Anomaly

Initially, the possibilities ranged from a bug or a plane to a satellite. Destin consulted with Jonathan McDowell, a renowned expert in satellite tracking. McDowell analyzed the angular velocity of the object in the video, considering its apparent size and the duration it was visible. While the object’s speed was not inconsistent with that of a low-orbiting satellite, McDowell initially leaned towards it being a bug, given the proximity of the recording camera to potential airborne insects.

To further investigate, Destin reached out to Jeff Geerling, another YouTuber who was filming from the same location, approximately 130 meters away. By synchronizing their footage, they were able to compare observations. The object appeared in both their recordings, approximately 100 yards apart, and at a similar relative position in their frames. This shared observation, especially considering the distance between the cameras, made a local bug highly improbable. The object’s trajectory and speed, when analyzed geometrically, suggested an object at a significant altitude, consistent with a satellite.

Despite cross-referencing with known satellite databases, including Starlink satellites, a definitive identification remained elusive. The exact satellite responsible for the sighting has not yet been confirmed, presenting a compelling mystery for amateur astronomers and space enthusiasts.

The Single-Frame Masterpiece

Meanwhile, the photographic experiment yielded a stunning result. Weeks later, the developed Ektachrome film was scanned, revealing the meticulously crafted composite image. Dr. Telepun, who had not seen such a single-frame composite in decades, was astounded by the technical achievement and the resulting photograph, calling it “the best one film sequence that I’ve ever seen.” The image beautifully encapsulates the entire eclipse, a testament to Destin’s dedication and the historical photographic technique.
