TSA Union Leader Calls ICE Airport Plan ‘Ridiculous’ Amid Funding Crisis

Robert Mack, a union leader for Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers in San Diego, has strongly criticized President Trump’s proposal to send Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to airports. Mack, who oversees TSA operations at San Diego International Airport and serves as chief steward for the American Federation of Government Employees Local 1260, called the plan “the most ridiculous thing” he has heard. This statement comes as a funding dispute for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) continues, impacting thousands of federal employees.

Government Shutdown Impacts TSA Workers

Mack joined the TSA after the September 11th attacks, driven by a sense of civic duty to protect the nation. He once viewed his career as promising, but now faces significant financial strain and instability due to the ongoing funding lapse.

“We’re all hurting, literally,” Mack stated, describing how checking accounts are being depleted. He noted that many TSA employees have not recovered from previous funding gaps.

Thousands of TSA employees have been working without pay since the DHS funding expired last month. This shutdown is a result of a political stalemate between Democrats and Republicans over immigration policy.

Democrats are demanding reforms for ICE before agreeing to fund the department. Republicans, in turn, have blocked efforts to fund only the TSA while leaving other parts of DHS unfunded.

President Threatens ICE Deployment at Airports

President Trump took to social media to announce his plan if TSA funding is not resolved by Monday. He stated that ICE is prepared to step in and provide airport security. Their duties, he indicated, would include the immediate arrest of undocumented immigrants within the country.

“I think it’s wrong completely,” Mack said of the President’s proposal. “I think that you know there’s so many. Really good immigrant people living in this country that they’ve been here for who knows, 20, 30, 50 years, and I think that they pay their taxes and they’re good people.”

Uncertain Future for TSA Employees

As ICE agents continue their work while facing potential pay disruptions, and politicians remain locked in their dispute, Mack foresees more TSA employees leaving the agency. He believes many will seek employment elsewhere, abandoning careers they once considered stable and rewarding. This exodus could further strain airport security operations.

Mack emphasized that his commitment to his duty remains strong. However, he acknowledged the harsh reality of his personal financial situation.

“At the end, if I can’t put food in my stomach, I can’t keep a roof over my head,” he explained. He feels that the people he is supposed to serve, referring to the government officials involved in the funding debate, are failing him and his colleagues.

Looking Ahead

The standoff over DHS funding continues, with the TSA workforce bearing the brunt of the political divide. The potential deployment of ICE agents to airports represents a significant escalation of the dispute, raising concerns among TSA employees and potentially impacting travel for the public. The focus remains on whether a deal will be reached to end the shutdown and restore pay to federal workers.
