Mejia Wins Big in NJ, Vows to Fight Trump and Oligarchy
Annalilia Mejia won a special House election in New Jersey by nearly 20 points, calling herself Congress's "unbought, unbossed, sassy new member." Her victory highlights a trend of Democratic success in special elections. Mejia plans to focus on connecting the rising cost of living and government corruption to fight against what she calls "Trump and the oligarchy."
Mejia Secures Landslide Victory in New Jersey Special Election
Annalilia Mejia, a Democrat, has won a special House election in New Jersey, securing a significant victory on Thursday night. She proudly called herself Congress’s “unbought, unbossed, sassy new member.” Mejia’s win was not entirely unexpected, as she ran to fill the seat vacated by another Democrat, who is now New Jersey’s governor. The election was a decisive win, with Mejia defeating her Republican opponent, Joe Hathaway, by nearly 20 percentage points.
Record of Special Election Successes
This victory adds to the Democratic Party’s recent successes in special elections. It shows a strong performance ahead of the upcoming November midterms. Mejia’s margin of victory was an improvement compared to the Democratic Party’s performance in the same district in 2024.
For example, Kamala Harris won the district by nine points, and Mikey Sherrill was re-elected by 15 points. These wins suggest a positive trend for Democrats.
A Crowded Primary and an Unlikely Ally
Mejia’s path to Congress was not easy. She faced a crowded field of candidates in the Democratic primary, with as many as 13 people vying for the nomination. Mejia credits her campaign’s strong ground game for helping her stand out.
Interestingly, a powerful pro-Israel lobbying group, AIPAC, and its aligned super PAC, the United Democracy Project, played an indirect role. They spent money during the primary, aiming to build a larger pro-Israel majority in Congress.
AIPAC’s Focus on a Different Candidate
The United Democracy Project did not target Mejia directly. Instead, they focused their attacks on one of her Democratic opponents, Tom Malinowski.
Malinowski was a former two-term congressman and was considered the frontrunner at the time. He was known as a progressive voice, joining figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders.
Connecting Kitchen Table Issues to Larger Problems
In an interview, Mejia explained her campaign’s focus on connecting everyday concerns to broader political issues. She stated that people are often concerned about “kitchen table issues” like affordability and rent.
Mejia believes that people are starting to understand the link between an “autocratic government and the oligarchy” and how it affects their lives. She sees this connection as crucial for voters to grasp.
Defining Authoritarianism and Oligarchy
Mejia offered clear definitions for the terms she uses. She described an authoritarian as “a corrupt politician that has gotten a taste for stealing from the people and wants to stay in power.” An oligarch, in her view, is a corrupt politician who wants to enrich themselves, their clients, and workers, and “keep the grift going.” Both, she argued, share a common enemy: an informed public.
The Fight for Democracy and Fair Systems
Mejia stressed that the fight is not just about progressive policies but about fundamental principles. She called it a “pro-democracy, pro-American government, pro-Constitution kind of issue.” She highlighted the nation’s 250th anniversary and the need to defend balanced government, prevent executive overreach, and ensure transparency and ethics. She criticized the current president for “systematically undermining our Constitution.”
Abolishing ICE and Protecting Rights
A key policy Mejia discussed is the need to abolish and replace ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). She called it a “rogue police force turning its weapons against the American people.” More broadly, she warned of a president with a “rogue force that could turn itself on democracy.” Mejia believes such actions undermine the Constitution and deny due process and equal protection, not just to immigrants but to all Americans.
Universal Healthcare and Government Spending
Mejia, who has ties to Bernie Sanders, also spoke about universal healthcare. She pointed out that many modern countries have it, expressing a degree of envy. She questioned the significant spending on wars, like the one in Iraq, when that money could be used for essential programs.
These include SNAP, Medicaid, veterans’ affairs, and infrastructure projects. She emphasized that this is “real money” being diverted.
Oligarchs Enriching Themselves While Undermining Government
Mejia criticized the current administration, stating that “cronies” and “closest allies are enriching themselves.” This happens while they “dismantle the American government” and “our safety net programs.” She noted specific examples: the elimination of ACA tax credits increased health insurance costs by 175 percent. Energy tax credits being removed raised energy costs by 6 percent.
The consolidation of rental housing by private equity firms has increased housing costs by 5 percent in one year. Mejia concluded that the connection between oligarchs and a corrupt administration is costing Americans money, and people are starting to realize it.
Focusing on Cost of Living and Corruption for Midterms
With 199 days left until the midterm elections, Mejia offered advice for Democrats. She believes focusing on the connection between the rising cost of living and government corruption is key.
She also highlighted the influence of Donald Trump on the Republican Party. Mejia is confident that if Democrats stay focused on these issues, voters will make a choice that leads to winning not only the House but also sets the stage for 2028.
