Zelensky Links Iran’s Drone Supply to Russia’s War Effort
Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has drawn a direct parallel between Iran’s supply of drones and weapons to Russia and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, issuing an emergency statement that resonated internationally. In an address that has since circulated widely, Zelensky articulated Ukraine’s position on escalating global tensions, emphasizing the interconnectedness of security threats and the need for a united front against aggression.
Ukraine’s Stance on Middle East Conflict
President Zelensky began by acknowledging the rapid unfolding of events in the Middle East and the Gulf region, stating, “Unfortunately, Ukraine knows what we are talking about all too well.” He drew a stark comparison between Iran’s actions and the suffering Ukraine has endured. “Although the Ukrainians never threatened Iran, the Iranian regime itself chose to be Putin’s accomplice and supplied him with shaheds. And not only by the drones themselves, but also by technology. Iran also provided other weapons to Russia.”
“In total during this time of the full-scale war, the Russians used more than 57,000 shahed type attack drones against Ukraine, against our people, against our cities, against our energy. Other peoples also suffered from terror.”
This statement highlights Ukraine’s perspective that Iran’s involvement is not merely a regional issue but a direct contribution to Russia’s capacity for aggression, impacting not only Ukraine but potentially other nations subjected to Iranian-supplied weaponry and technology.
Call for International Action and Support
Zelensky’s remarks carried a strong call for international resolve, suggesting that the Iranian people should be given the opportunity to break free from what he termed a “terrorist regime.” He stated, “So, it’s fair to give the Iranian people a chance to get rid of the terrorist regime, to get rid of and guarantee the security of all nations who suffered from terror originating in Iran.”
The Ukrainian President reiterated Ukraine’s long-standing position, emphasizing the importance of saving lives and preventing the expansion of conflict. He specifically invoked the role of the United States, asserting, “It is important that the United States is determined and whenever there is American determination, global criminals weaken.” This underscores Ukraine’s reliance on and advocacy for strong U.S. leadership in confronting global security challenges.
Broader Implications and Diplomatic Efforts
The address also touched upon the broader implications for regional stability and the ongoing diplomatic efforts. Zelensky expressed optimism that the current events could lead to a safer and more stable Middle East. “We expect that as a result the Middle East region will become safer and more stable. Many changes are already for the sake of this.” He also affirmed Ukraine’s willingness to contribute to global security, stating, “Ukraine is ready to help every nation so that there is more security and justice and there are fewer terrorist regimes.”
Discussions regarding future diplomatic engagements were also mentioned. Zelensky indicated that the timing and location of future meetings between Ukrainian and U.S. teams would be determined based on security circumstances and diplomatic capabilities. He also reiterated Russia’s need to cease its aggression, stating, “Russia needs to end its aggression against us, against Ukraine, against the whole of Europe, and safety must be guaranteed.”
Strengthening Alliances and Future Prospects
In addition to addressing international conflicts, President Zelensky also highlighted ongoing bilateral cooperation. He reported on a significant meeting in Kyiv with representatives from the Netherlands, a key supporter of Ukraine. The delegation, including the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, arrived shortly after forming a new government, a gesture Zelensky described as highly meaningful.
During the meeting, discussions focused on the security situation, intelligence assessments regarding Russia’s near-future expectations, and prospects for negotiations. Zelensky expressed gratitude for the Netherlands’ continued support, particularly in the crucial area of air defense, noting their contributions through both the “Pearl program” and bilateral initiatives. He pledged to continue strengthening these vital relationships with the Netherlands, European partners, and the broader free world to enhance collective security.
“We will continue such cooperation at all levels with the Netherlands, with all our partners in Europe, with all partners in the free world. We will continue to build relations that add protection to life,” Zelensky concluded, thanking all those supporting Ukraine’s fight for freedom and security.
