Democrats Energized for Elections, Clyburn Says
U.S. Representative Jim Clyburn sees strong Democratic engagement for upcoming elections, citing gains in a Georgia special election. He also linked rising inflation to tariffs and energy costs, impacting household affordability. Clyburn emphasized that potential presidential candidates must address current American concerns to build future success.
Democrats Showed Strong Engagement in Georgia Special Election
U.S. Representative Jim Clyburn of South Carolina believes Democrats are highly motivated for the upcoming elections, citing recent performance in a Georgia special election as proof. While Democrats did not win the district, which historically leans Republican and was carried by Donald Trump in 2024, they made significant gains. Clyburn noted that the margin of victory for Republicans narrowed considerably, from a 37-point difference in the last election to just 11 points in this recent contest.
“The result told us all we need to know about this year,” Clyburn stated. “Democrats are excited about the upcoming elections and they are engaged.” He described seeing a level of enthusiasm among the Democratic electorate not witnessed since 2008. This momentum, he explained, shows the party is building strength for the current election cycle, leaving him “very, very, very, very pleased.”
Clyburn Links Inflation to Tariffs, Affecting Affordability
The conversation also touched upon recent inflation numbers showing a 3.3% rise, the first time in two years. Clyburn, though not an economist, offered his perspective on the economic situation. He argued that increasing tariffs and raising energy costs are major drivers of inflation.
“I know you can’t bring inflation down if you are raising tariffs. And if you are doing the things that lead, the cost of energy, those are two of the most inflationary things that you can possibly do,” Clyburn explained.
He believes that policies focused on increasing these costs directly impact affordability for American families. This makes affordability a central issue for the upcoming elections.
Clyburn stressed that the idea that affordability is not a concern is incorrect. He suggested that everyday experiences, like visiting a grocery store or a gas station, clearly show the financial pressures many Americans are facing today. This directly affects the daily lives of voters as they consider their choices.
South Carolina’s Key Role in 2028 Presidential Race
Clyburn discussed the upcoming National Action Network’s convention in New York, where potential candidates for the 2028 presidential election are expected to appear. Vice President Kamala Harris and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg are among those scheduled to speak. Clyburn highlighted South Carolina’s key role in the presidential nomination process, especially after changes to the early state calendar.
He emphasized that any candidate serious about running for president needs to engage with South Carolina. Clyburn, a significant political figure in the state, particularly within the Democratic Party, will be closely watching these potential candidates. He played a key role in Joe Biden’s nomination in 2020, making his endorsement highly sought after.
Focus on Immediate Issues for Future Success
When asked what he hopes to hear from potential candidates, Clyburn stressed the importance of addressing current issues that impact people’s lives. He believes that success in future elections, including 2028, depends on achieving tangible results between now and the 2026 midterm elections.
“What are we doing today that will affect people’s lives as we approach the midterm elections?” Clyburn posed. He urged candidates to focus on the concerns and discomforts experienced by Americans.
“I am asking candidates to really take to heart these issues that are leading to discomfort in the lives of the American people,” he stated. This focus on immediate needs, he feels, is where the party’s attention should be directed.
