Flau’jae Johnson’s ‘Floss State’: Confidence Fuels Dominance

In the electrifying world of college basketball, few players embody the blend of skill, swagger, and self-belief quite like LSU’s Flau’jae Johnson. Known for her undeniable court presence and artistic flair, Johnson recently sat down for an exclusive interview, shedding light on the mindset that propels her to new heights and the philosophy behind her burgeoning success both on and off the court.

The Secret Sauce: Believing in Herself

When asked about the key to her consistent improvement and ability to elevate her game, Johnson’s answer is disarmingly simple yet profoundly powerful: self-belief. “Honestly, just believing in what I do, believing in me, and living with the result,” she stated. “You know, you got to have the utmost confidence to play this game. Everybody’s gonna have opinions. Everybody gonna say what they want to say. You got to have fun and you got to believe in what you do.”

This unwavering confidence is the bedrock of her performance, allowing her to enter what she calls the “floss state” – a zone of peak performance where she feels “in my bag.” This state, she explains, is crucial for her game. “When I’m working, like I’m kind of getting into like this, call it the flow state. I call it the flaws state. And so when I get in that state, like, you know what I’m saying? I’m just I’m just in my bag. So that’s what I want to reach every time I’m on the court.”

Basketball Means More: The SEC and Beyond

Johnson proudly represents the SEC, a conference synonymous with elite basketball talent. She echoes the league’s slogan, “It just means more,” explaining why the sport holds such significance for her. “Basketball for me, it’s it’s just what I love to do. It’s brought so much into my life. It’s taken me to places where I never really thought I could go,” she shared. “It’s taken me around the world. It’s it’s it’s taking care of my family uh with college and NIL and athletic. like it just mean more and and it means more because like you inspire people.”

She acknowledges the caliber of talent in the SEC, stating, “Everybody want to play in the SEC. The best players in the world play in the SEC. I’ll tell you that. So I’m just I’m just happy to be a part of that.”

Behind the LSU Tiger Spotlight

With the constant spotlight on a program as prominent as LSU, Johnson offered a glimpse into what fans might not fully grasp about the team. “Like we really are the type of team to like put it all out there. Like you know what I’m saying? Like what you see is what you get from us. And that’s like you could tell with coach Moi like what you see is what you get.” This transparency and authenticity define the LSU Tigers.

The Signature ‘Floss State’ Ritual

Johnson’s signature swagger is legendary, and her pre-game ritual is key to accessing her “floss state.” “It could be anything like any type of however you want to interpret it,” she said when asked about a signature move. “Really just music. Like I got to be listening to music. Preferably my own music. Like I listen to a lot of my unreleased music and I just be jamming out.”

This musical immersion is a focused effort to enter her competitive mode. “I’m really trying to get in that focused state. Like I’m really trying to get in that mode. So I really listen to a lot of music, get a lot of rest, like eat good foods, and try to just be real focused. Like I’m trying to be one with myself.”

Artistry on the Court: Music and Basketball Collide

The parallels between Johnson’s artistry as a musician and her game on the basketball court are striking. She believes her approach to music translates directly to her on-court performance. “Being unconscious. Like when I’m doing music, like I’m not thinking about anything. And I play my best basketball when I’m not thinking about anything,” she explained. “When I’m not focused on anything, but scoring the ball and passing the ball and making the right play, like I play so great. just being in that unconscious mode. Like that’s where they both kind of correlate, you know?”

This ability to tune out distractions and enter a state of flow is a learned skill. “Got to get in that mode. Got to get in that floss state. Like I don’t know. It’s like It’s a focus to it. But at the end of the day, it’s just like being like confident in yourself. Like this is what I do. Like this is my time.”

Choosing Better: Body Armor Partnership

Beyond the court, Johnson has also made significant strides in her career, recently announced as a new athlete with Body Armor. The brand’s ethos of “choose better” resonates deeply with her personal philosophy. “I feel like it’s just being intentional. Like every day I wake up, first I’m grateful, but then I wake up and I’m I have an intention. I have an intention to do something and it’s usually positive and it’s usually productive. So I I’m just trying to be better every day in life. Like that’s my motto for sure.”

Her drive for self-improvement is a constant battle. “I literally like I’m I’m my only critic. Like I’m I’m I’m the only person that can stop me,” she asserted. “So when you battling yourself and you battling your mental and you battling that voice in your head telling you to stop when you know you can go some more and you push, that’s the real fight.”

The alignment with Body Armor felt natural. “Everything really aligned what they were about. That’s definitely what I was about. And I was just like, we really align and this is something that can really push, you know, the culture forward.” She also highlighted the presence of other “dope athletes” already partnered with the brand as a draw.

On Set with Body Armor

Johnson also shared her experience filming with Body Armor, describing it as a “beautiful” and “fun set.” The production team transformed the LSU gym, creating a vibrant atmosphere. “It was a very nice production. Very easy. drinking a lot of body armor now. You know what I’m saying? I I was definitely hydrated, but it was it was a fun set. Like, I had a good time.” The collaboration was a testament to her ability to seamlessly blend her athletic prowess with her growing brand presence.

“When you battling yourself and you battling your mental and you battling that voice in your head telling you to stop when you know you can go some more and you push, that’s the real fight.”
