Trump’s ‘Grand Conspiracy’ Probe Faces Setbacks Amid Skepticism
A Justice Department investigation into alleged "manufactured intelligence" by the Obama administration is reportedly stalling, with key subpoenas withdrawn and prosecutors reassigned. Previous extensive inquiries, including the Durham probe, found the origins of the Russia investigation were properly predicated, yielding no significant criminal charges against officials like former CIA Director John Brennan.
Justice Department Investigation into Obama-Era Officials Stalls
A Justice Department probe, framed by allies of former President Donald Trump as a “grand conspiracy” campaign against him, is reportedly experiencing significant setbacks. The investigation, which has targeted former Obama administration officials including ex-CIA Director John Brennan, appears to be losing momentum as key subpoenas are being withdrawn and prosecutors reassigned. This development comes after years of scrutiny into the origins of the Russia investigation from 2016.
The probe, spearheaded by a new prosecutor, Joe DiGenova, a vocal critic of Brennan, has reportedly halted its efforts to question former government and CIA personnel before a grand jury. This pause follows the removal of the veteran prosecutor overseeing the case, Maria Medidis-Long, who sources say informed her superiors that there was insufficient evidence to pursue criminal charges against Brennan.
Years of Investigations Yield No Criminal Charges
The current investigation into alleged “manufactured intelligence” by the Obama administration aims to discredit Trump’s 2016 victory. However, multiple previous inquiries have reached similar conclusions. These include the Durham investigation, the DOJ Inspector General’s report under Michael Horowitz, and a deep dive by the Senate Intelligence Committee led by Senator Marco Rubio.
Each of these extensive reviews found that the initial investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election was properly predicated. The Durham probe resulted in one conviction of an FBI lawyer, who pleaded guilty and avoided jail time. The Senate Intelligence Committee’s investigation also found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing regarding the Russia probe’s origins.
Skepticism Mounts Over Retribution Motives
Critics, including former CIA Director John Brennan himself, express deep skepticism regarding the purpose of this latest Justice Department push. They suggest it is a political retribution campaign, aimed at fabricating a conspiracy theory to undermine Trump’s opponents. Brennan stated, “It’s clear that this administration, the Trump administration, wants to continue to try to assert that there was some wrongdoing.”
The timing of the renewed focus has also drawn attention, with some suggesting it coincides with Trump’s fluctuating poll numbers or a desire to energize his base. Allies of Trump, however, continue to echo sentiments that figures like Brennan and former FBI officials should face legal consequences. Joe DiGenova previously stated in 2019, “The bar bill is coming due, and Durham’s appointment means that the core of this conspiracy began with John Brennan.”
Justice Department Under Scrutiny
Many former Justice Department officials are reportedly dismayed and worried by the current direction of the department. They emphasize the importance of integrity and adherence to the oath of office, rather than pursuing politically motivated charges. “I am glad that there are individuals, prosecutors, those who are working every day and U.S. Attorney offices throughout the country who take their oath of office seriously and are going to continue to pursue the facts and will not fabricate any type of charges just because they’re political overseers direct them to do so,” Brennan commented.
Despite the internal and external concerns, the Justice Department has labeled the reassignment of the previous prosecutor as “routine practice.” The future of the “grand conspiracy” case remains uncertain as it navigates these internal challenges and ongoing skepticism from various quarters. The focus now shifts to whether new evidence or strategic changes will revive the stalled investigation.
