Russia Targets EU Factories; Space Nuke Threat Looms

Russia has openly declared European military factories as potential targets, publishing their addresses. Simultaneously, the US has warned of Russia's potential deployment of nuclear weapons in orbit, a move that could cripple global satellite systems. In response, Western nations are increasing military aid to Ukraine, including significant drone and air defense packages.

Russia Escalates Threats, Labels EU Factories as Targets

Russia has taken a significant step by openly threatening European military factories. On April 15th, the Russian Defense Ministry published a list of companies across Europe.

It claims these businesses are involved in producing strike drones for Ukraine. The ministry posted the addresses on its Telegram channel, a platform officially banned in Russia.

This move effectively labels these European manufacturers as legitimate targets for their alleged cooperation with Ukraine. In a section titled “branch of Ukrainian companies in Europe,” Russia listed eleven businesses. These included sites in London, Munich, and Prague.

Another list, “foreign enterprises producing components,” named ten companies. Some of these were located in Madrid and Venice.

Questions Arise Over Russian Claims and Intentions

Russian officials claim that drones for Ukraine are being produced in the UK, Germany, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, and the Czech Republic. They also warned these countries about supposed consequences.

The Russian Defense Ministry stated that supporting Ukraine is dragging European countries into war with Russia. They described this as a deliberate step that could sharply escalate the military and political situation across Europe.

The outlet Medusa has pointed out serious doubts about the accuracy of these claims. One address provided in Munich, Lehanau Strasa 2018, is actually a residential building. This raises questions about the credibility of the published lists.

It suggests Moscow might be using unverified or misleading information to pressure European countries. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev also commented, openly threatening European countries for supporting Ukraine.

US Warns of Russian Nuclear Weapons in Orbit

The United States has issued a new warning about a potential threat from Russia in space. US officials believe Moscow may be preparing to deploy nuclear weapons in orbit.

General Stephen Whiting, commander of US Space Force Command, described this as an unprecedented threat. He warned that such a move could potentially destroy satellites and disrupt global communications and navigation systems.

According to Whiting, a single nuclear detonation in orbit could disable thousands of satellites. This would cause widespread disruption to GPS, internet, mobile communications, and critical military intelligence.

Such an action would violate the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which bans placing nuclear weapons in orbit. The US is already preparing for this possibility and plans to significantly increase its spending on space defense.

West Increases Support for Ukraine Amid New Threats

In response to these escalating threats, the West is increasing its support for Ukraine. New sanctions are being implemented, and billions of dollars in aid are being provided. Ukraine is also set to receive hundreds of thousands of drones.

The US Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, stated that the US does not plan to extend exemptions for Russian oil sanctions. These temporary waivers, which allowed for oil already loaded onto tankers, have expired.

Ukraine’s Prime Minister, Denys Shmyhal, met with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in Washington. They discussed Ukraine’s financial and energy situation, as well as the impact of Middle East developments on global markets.

An agreement was reached to expand the operational capacity of the US-Ukraine reconstruction investment fund and to create a new joint investment fund. They also addressed strengthening sanctions pressure on Russia.

New Aid Packages Boost Ukraine’s Defense Capabilities

Ukraine will receive new aid packages worth over $5.5 billion. This funding will primarily support air defense systems and drone production.

Ukraine’s Defense Minister, Rustem Umerov, announced this following a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. He highlighted that a key outcome was the further reinforcement of Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.

Germany is contributing $4 billion to strengthen air defense, along with an additional $600 million for developing strike capabilities. The United Kingdom is providing its largest drone support package this year, delivering over 120,000 new drones.

The UK will also supply hundreds of thousands of artillery rounds and thousands of air defense missiles. Other countries continuing to support Ukraine include the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Canada, Lithuania, Estonia, and Belgium.

Hungary Withdraws Troops Guarding Infrastructure

Hungary is withdrawing soldiers who were deployed to guard critical infrastructure. These troops had been assigned partly due to what some officials described as a Ukrainian threat.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had suggested that Ukraine could potentially strike Hungary’s energy system amid disputes over the Druzhba oil pipeline. Following this, troops were deployed to protect energy infrastructure.

The order to withdraw them was issued by the Chief of Hungarian Defense Forces. The armed forces have begun rationalizing the number of service members assigned to protect critical infrastructure.

Infrastructure operators have reviewed and strengthened their security measures, reducing the need for military support. In total, around 600 soldiers had been deployed to guard energy facilities.
