Maul’s Master Plan Unfolds in Star Wars: Tales of the Empire

The latest episodes of Star Wars: Tales of the Empire have dropped, and they’re packed with action, secrets, and some seriously cool callbacks for fans. Episodes 3, “Whispers in the Unknown,” and 4, “Pride and Vengeance,” dive deep into the complex mind of Maul and the struggles of other characters trying to survive in a galaxy ruled by fear. If you’re a Star Wars fan, get ready for some deep cuts and jaw-dropping moments.

Easter Eggs Galore in the Intro

Before we even get to the main story, the show’s intro itself is a treasure trove of Star Wars references. Eagle-eyed viewers can spot helmets and droid heads from across the saga. We see a classic Clone Trooper helmet, Ezra Bridger’s customized cadet helmet from Rebels, and Bucket from Resistance. Even Tech from The Bad Batch gets a nod, with fans still mourning his loss. The introduction of the 11th Brother, an Inquisitor, hints at future conflicts, and Barriss Offee’s Inquisitor mask connects to her complicated past with Ahsoka Tano. We also get a glimpse of C-21 Highinger, a bounty hunter droid from The Clone Wars, and Marrok, the first Inquisitor whose backstory will be explored. Finally, Tubbouts, a Janx police droid, makes an appearance, foreshadowing his role in the upcoming events.

Maul’s Game of Deception

Episode 3 kicks off with unsettling whispers, possibly in the Sith language, as Maul attempts to manipulate Devon. The visual of two moons over Janick hints at Maul’s desire for a partnership, but his true intentions are far from honorable. The scene where Maul shares a special tea with Devon, a drink he once shared with Pre Vizsla when planning the Shadow Collective, shows he’s trying to forge an alliance. However, knowing Maul, this is likely a trap.

Maul’s dialogue is key here. He plays on Devon’s past, her feelings of being wronged, and draws parallels between their own experiences of being cast aside by powerful masters. He speaks of his mother, Mother Talzin, and his brother, Savage Opress, both victims of Darth Sidious. Maul suggests that even the Clone Troopers who turned on the Jedi were manipulated by the same enemy. He’s trying to convince Devon that they share a common foe.

When Devon, after being tempted by Maul’s words, grabs half of his lightsaber, Maul’s response is chilling: “That’s good. I can work with that… but you won’t like it.” The only light comes from the ignited saber, casting Maul’s shadowy form in an eerie glow. This suggests he’s using his corrupted kyber crystal to get inside Devon’s head.

Meanwhile, Captain Brander, Lawson, and Tubbouts are tracking Maul, Devon, and others. They see the Black Sun syndicate logo, a group connected to the Shadow Collective. We also see a picture of Niko Deus with “DECEASED” written over it, hinting at his fate. As Devon struggles in the dark, Maul’s voice whispers about her unfulfilled destiny, offering her a chance at glory. Her defensive pose with the saber is reminiscent of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s iconic stance, a subtle nod to their future confrontation.

A Galaxy of Trouble

The episode also shows Rook Cast using a rocket launcher to destroy a Spice shipment, a dangerous drug. Captain Brander attends his son’s sporting event, a game called Bek’in, where he’s approached by Jedi Master Eeth Koth. Koth reveals Devon is his niece and warns Brander about Maul, testing his loyalty by suggesting the Empire could handle the situation. Brander’s anti-Empire stance shows he’s trustworthy.

Maul reveals his plan to Devon: to fight a common enemy, hinting at his desire to overthrow Sidious. He also warns about the Inquisitors, the Jedi hunters. Devon sees a way out, a light source, and follows it, reminiscent of her escape in episode 2.

Tubbouts, ever the informant, suggests reporting to the Empire, mentioning that the Republic used to send Jedi Knights. He also lets slip that Captain Lawson’s ex-wife works for the Empire, explaining Lawson’s reluctance to involve them. This detail adds a personal layer to Lawson’s motivations.

Vario, trying to smooth things over with the Pikes, requests a nerf fillet. Rook threatens him to get the Pikes to cooperate. Spybot, a droid with a disturbing personality, makes a chilling threat, showing its psychopathic tendencies.

On the Pike homeworld of Oeedai, Marg Krim is contacted by Vario. Vario blames rogue lieutenants for the disrupted shipment and promises to deliver credits. Next episode, Chief Clyce learns Tubbouts reported to her seeking Imperial reinforcements, a betrayal of Lawson’s trust.

Devon sees another path to escape, but it’s blocked by a larger shadow. As she and Maul ignite their sabers, we hear a distinct roar – it’s Maul’s actual scream, modulated to create the sound of his lightsaber igniting. This adds a visceral layer to the fight.

Maul taunts Devon, fighting with one hand behind his back, trying to provoke her rage. He gets close, showing restraint, but then tells her, “Your life is in ruin.” Devon unleashes a growl, mirroring his moves and even leaping over him, a move reminiscent of Obi-Wan’s attack on Maul. She Force Pushes him back, and we hear the whispers again – Maul’s kyber crystal is speaking in an alien language, reading Devon’s thoughts and reporting back to him.

Maul reclaims his saber, having gotten the information he needed. Devon escapes as Maul retreats into the shadows, a classic film noir villain. The episode ends with a chilling reminder of Maul’s presence.

Pride and Vengeance Revealed

Episode 4, “Pride and Vengeance,” begins with the same whispers. Vario meets the Pikes, seemingly betraying Maul, but it’s a ruse orchestrated by Rook Cast to gain access to Marg Krim’s inner circle. A hooded Zabrak attacks the Pikes, but only uses one half of Maul’s saber, and their swings are less skilled, suggesting it’s not Maul.

It’s revealed to be Icarus, another night brother, thinner like Maul. This shows Maul’s strategic use of decoys. The real Maul then appears, ignites his saber, and cuts Krim in half, a move reminiscent of how he killed Duchess Satine and how Luke cut down Snoke. Maul’s fighting style is now elegant and deadly.

Maul reveals his past on Mandalore, seeking refuge with the Pikes after leaving Ahsoka. He appoints a Pike named Cult to lead the syndicate, ensuring his influence. Meanwhile, Devon, still injured, reunites with Master Eeth Koth. Koth senses the darkness in her, a result of her interaction with Maul. Devon is eager to hunt Maul, fearing he might reveal the presence of two Jedi fugitives to the Inquisitors.

Koth laments the Jedi’s fall from grace, regretting their involvement in the Clone Wars. He sends Maul’s location to Captain Lawson, who assembles a strike team. Tubbouts, however, insists on alerting the Empire, calling the “fascist hotline” and confirming their assistance, despite Brander’s attempts to stop him.

As Lawson’s team approaches Maul’s hideout, Spybot makes a strange noise. The hideout’s architecture has an ancient feel. Maul contacts Brander, offering a truce, but Brander demands surrender. Maul refuses, and the fight begins.

Maul, Eeth Koth, and Devon engage in a lightsaber duel. Maul tries to corrupt Devon, appealing to her power, but Koth calls his words a delusion. The duel between the two Jedi-colored sabers and Maul’s double-sided saber is visually stunning, echoing the fight in The Phantom Menace.

Maul’s fighting style is more refined now, less theatrical than in his younger days. Devon fights more aggressively, learning from Maul. Koth, fighting longer, discovers Maul’s legs are robotic and kicks out his knee. Maul retaliates, kicking Koth down the stairs. Devon leaps to protect her master.

Spybot creates fog for Maul’s allies to retreat. Maul has another chance to kill Devon but refrains, still believing he can sway her. Lawson realizes Koth and Devon are Jedi and lets them escape, driven by his hatred for his ex-wife. As everyone retreats, a massive Imperial Star Destroyer appears, signaling the arrival of the Inquisitors and a new wave of danger. The iconic Imperial March plays, setting a grim tone for what’s to come.
