AI Fears Lead to Attack on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman
A 20-year-old man, Daniel Moreno-Gama, faces attempted murder charges after allegedly attacking OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's home. His actions appear linked to extreme fears about artificial intelligence, particularly the development of AGI. This incident highlights a broader societal anxiety surrounding AI and economic inequality.
AI Fears Prompt Attack on OpenAI CEO
A 20-year-old man, Daniel Moreno-Gama, has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The incident, which occurred last week, follows a pattern of online posts by Moreno-Gama expressing deep fears about the future of artificial intelligence. These posts, made in December 2025 on a public Discord channel called Stop AI, reveal a disturbing connection between anxieties surrounding AI development and real-world violence.
Under the username “Butlerian Jihadist,” a reference to the science fiction novel DUNE, Moreno-Gama inquired about the consequences of discussing violence. When pressed by a reporter from The Free Press, he spoke of “Luigi-ing some tech CEOs,” a phrase referencing Luigi Mangione. This online persona and its violent rhetoric are now linked to the alleged attack on Altman.
Online Threats Evolve into Alleged Violence
The Free Press producer Andy Mills interviewed Moreno-Gama in January. At that time, the 20-year-old appeared to retract some of his more extreme statements.
He stated he did not consider himself a violent person. However, he also expressed a belief that violence might be necessary to stop the industry’s current direction, which he feared could lead to human extinction.
“I would normally only advocate for violence as the absolute and continue to see the industry move in the direction it’s moving now, that by whatever means necessary, we have to stop the extinction of the human race.”
When directly asked if he thought killing Sam Altman would be wise, Moreno-Gama responded with a clear “No.” This interview occurred between January and the recent alleged attack, suggesting a shift in his mindset or a growing desperation.
The Underlying Fear: Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)
The fears expressed by Moreno-Gama are rooted in concerns about Artificial General Intelligence, or AGI. AGI refers to AI that is as smart and capable as the most intelligent human.
Many in the tech industry, including CEOs like Sam Altman, openly discuss the potential for AGI to bring about profound changes to human history. However, this also comes with significant uncertainty and potential risks.
Moreno-Gama’s belief, while acted upon in a criminal manner, reflects a fear shared by some that advanced AI could pose an existential threat to humanity. This concern is not entirely fringe; even the tech leaders developing these technologies acknowledge the possibility of catastrophic outcomes if AGI falls into the wrong hands or develops with harmful intentions.
CEOs Share Similar Worries
Ironically, the very individuals Moreno-Gama seemingly targeted are themselves vocal about the dangers of unchecked AI development. CEOs like Dario Amadei, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk have, in the past, expressed worries about irresponsible actors creating AGI. They often frame the intense race to develop AGI as a necessary measure to ensure it is created by those with good intentions, rather than malicious ones.
This perspective suggests a belief that the only way to prevent a dangerous AGI is to be the first to create a safe one. This has led to rapid advancements and a competitive environment among leading AI companies, often driven by the fear of what might happen if they are not the ones leading the charge.
Broader Societal Discomfort and Inequality
The incident also highlights a growing sense of discomfort and fear among the general public regarding the rapid pace of AI development. Many feel they have little agency in how this powerful technology is created and controlled. This discomfort is amplified by increasing economic inequality, where a small number of wealthy individuals and corporations hold immense power and wealth.
The widening gap between the rich and the rest of society fuels resentment. When combined with anxieties about job displacement and the potential societal disruption caused by AI, it creates a volatile environment. The alleged attack on Sam Altman can be seen as a symptom of this larger societal unease, reflecting a feeling that ordinary people are being left behind or ignored by those in charge.
A Growing Trend of Unrest?
The alleged actions of Daniel Moreno-Gama are part of a concerning trend. Similar incidents, such as the actions of Luigi Mangione and the alleged assassination attempt on Charlie Kirk by Tyler Robinson, point to a rise in unrest and anger. These events are often linked to deep-seated frustrations with economic inequality and the concentration of power in the hands of a few.
Experts suggest that these incidents are emblematic of growing discontent in America. They serve as a wake-up call that these underlying issues must be addressed before they escalate further. The focus now is on how society and its leaders will respond to these growing fears and anxieties surrounding both AI and economic disparity.
