Dem Lawmaker Slams Trump’s Iran Policy, Navy Secretary Firing
Democratic Congressman Gregory Meeks sharply criticized President Trump's Iran policy, calling for diplomacy over military action. He also expressed deep concern over the recent firing of Navy Secretary John Phelan amidst ongoing operations. Meeks argued that the administration lacks a clear strategy and sufficient congressional oversight.
Democrat Criticizes Trump’s Iran Strategy Amidst Navy Secretary’s Dismissal
New York Congressman Gregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, strongly criticized President Trump’s approach to Iran this week. Meeks argued that the President’s actions, including calls for the Navy to “shoot and kill” any boats laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, are a dangerous misstep. He believes these aggressive tactics will not solve the issue and instead push the nation further from a peaceful resolution.
“You are not going to be able to bomb your way out of this,” Meeks stated during a recent interview. “You need to get back to the table and negotiate and understand that that is hard, but it’s necessary.” He pointed to Trump’s withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as a key reason for current tensions. Meeks feels the President’s current actions resemble a reality show, with the American people bearing the brunt of the consequences through rising gas and food prices.
Concerns Over Navy Secretary’s Ouster Amidst Operations
Adding to the concerns, Navy Secretary John Phelan was fired this week after months of disagreements with Pentagon leaders. His dismissal comes at a critical time, given the Navy’s important role in blockading Iranian ports.
Meeks expressed deep worry over this departure, especially given Phelan’s background as a decorated veteran with extensive experience. He questioned the judgment of those pushing Phelan out, particularly referencing a figure he identified as a “Fox TV person” who lacks significant military command experience.
“It’s dangerous what is happening by this administration,” Meeks asserted. He believes the individual pushing for Phelan’s removal, identified as Hegseth, is the one who should be leaving. This leadership change, Meeks fears, could negatively impact the ongoing operations and the Navy’s effectiveness during this tense period.
Lack of Strategy and Congressional Oversight Questioned
The Congressman also highlighted a perceived lack of a clear strategy from the Trump administration regarding Iran. He stated there has been no plan from day one, which explains why Congress has not been adequately briefed. Meeks suggested that the President may have misunderstood Iran, perhaps believing it was similar to Venezuela and that a swift regime change was possible.
“Iran is not Venezuela,” Meeks emphasized. He contrasted Trump’s approach with previous administrations, noting that past presidents understood the complexities of dealing with Iran.
The Congressman revealed that oversight of the war effort has been minimal, with only three classified hearings held since the conflict began. He noted that one of these was for a select group, and another was a repeat of information already presented.
Call for Transparency and Real Negotiations
Meeks expressed frustration that his committee has not been given sufficient information or opportunities for hearings. He went so far as to move for subpoenas in a recent hearing, seeking testimony from individuals involved in negotiations. He specifically named Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, describing them as real estate developers and negotiators without confirmed Senate roles, who he believes should be testifying about the situation.
The Congressman stressed the need for serious negotiation and diplomacy, urging a return to the negotiating table. He believes this is the only path to de-escalate the situation and find a lasting solution. Meeks concluded by thanking the interviewer for the time, highlighting his ongoing concerns about the administration’s foreign policy decisions and their impact.
