Congressman Slams Senator’s Iran Stance: ‘Cheer for US, Not Them’

A Texas congressman is strongly criticizing a Democratic senator’s recent comments regarding Iran. Congressman Pat Fallon stated that Senator Chris Murphy’s remarks, which seemed to downplay concerns about Iran’s actions, were irresponsible. Fallon argued that elected officials should always support the United States, especially when dealing with foreign adversaries like Iran.

The controversy began when Senator Murphy, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, posted on social media. He shared a report about Iran’s “shadow fleet” bypassing U.S. blockades, calling it “awesome.” This comment caused a significant backlash online.

Murphy later claimed his post was meant to be sarcastic. However, Congressman Fallon dismissed this explanation as unbelievable and inappropriate for a senator.

Senator’s Comments Spark Outrage

Murphy’s initial post on Twitter suggested a positive reaction to Iran circumventing U.S. sanctions. “Awesome,” he wrote, after seeing a report that Iran’s fleet was getting around U.S. blockades.

This statement quickly drew criticism from many who felt it was insensitive and potentially harmful to U.S. foreign policy goals. The senator later tried to explain that he was using sarcasm, a common form of humor that says the opposite of what is meant.

However, many, including Congressman Fallon, did not accept this explanation. Fallon stated that a U.S. senator should not use sarcasm on a platform like Twitter when discussing sensitive geopolitical issues.

He believes that at best, the senator was being flippant, and at worst, he was actually supporting Iran. The congressman emphasized that officials in such high positions must be clear and avoid ambiguity.

Calls for Patriotism Over Politics

Congressman Fallon expressed frustration that some Democrats seem to prioritize criticizing former President Trump over supporting the nation. He believes that Senator Murphy’s actions, along with similar statements from other Democrats, undermine U.S. efforts to pressure Iran. Fallon stated that these politicians should be cheering for the success of the United States, not appearing to side with its adversaries.

Adding to the criticism, Fallon pointed out that Senator Murphy was recently in Spain. While there, Murphy reportedly apologized for the United States being in a state of “disarray.” Fallon found this particularly troubling, as Spain has not always been a strong supporter of U.S. policy regarding Iran. He feels that overseas, American leaders should present a united front, not criticize their own country.

Does Iran Benefit?

Fallon suggested that the Iranian regime likely counts on actions and statements from figures like Senator Murphy. He believes that such comments provide the Iranian government with an advantage, making it seem as though the U.S. is divided or uncertain. This, in turn, could help Iran’s efforts to survive international pressure and potentially negotiate better terms.

The congressman questioned whether Democratic politicians understand the role they might be playing. He asked if they realized their words could be used to help the current Iranian regime.

Fallon called it “disgusting” and asked when the Democratic Party became a “propaganda wing” for Iran’s leaders. He also disputed the claim that 18 Iranian ships had successfully run the U.S. blockade, calling that information misinformation.

Ethics Committee and Resignation

The discussion also touched upon another recent event: the resignation of a Democratic congresswoman. Sheila McCormack resigned from Congress after facing an ethics committee hearing.

The committee was investigating allegations of fraud and stealing money from the federal government. McCormack’s company allegedly received payments that were much larger than initially reported, and she is accused of keeping the funds.

Congressman Fallon stated that based on his understanding, McCormack’s company was supposed to receive $50,000 but ended up with $5 million. He believes the Ethics Committee likely recommended her expulsion from Congress.

McCormack has claimed the process was a rush to judgment and that she did not receive due process. Fallon countered that the committee’s investigation took several years, which he argued is not a rush.

He also noted that the Ethics Committee is made up of an equal number of Democrats and Republicans. This bipartisan makeup usually requires agreement to move forward.

Fallon believes the committee’s decision was unanimous, indicating strong evidence against McCormack. He concluded that her resignation and departure from Congress were appropriate actions.
