Mbappé & Vini Jr. Flop: Real Madrid’s Star Duo Fails to Click

It’s hard to believe, but Real Madrid finished the season with zero trophies. This comes after a period where the club celebrated winning both La Liga and the Champions League.

The summer of 2024 was supposed to be huge with Kylian Mbappé joining the team. Now, those past victories feel like a distant memory.

The excitement around Mbappé joining Real Madrid after years of rumors has completely faded. It felt like a perfect match, especially as the team was on the rise.

Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo were leading the attack, Jude Bellingham was dominating the midfield, and Mbappé looked like the missing piece for the best team on Earth. But two years later, Barcelona has won La Liga twice in a row, and Real Madrid hasn’t advanced past the quarterfinals in the Champions League.

A Mismatched Partnership

The biggest issue seems to be the partnership between Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior. After two seasons, it’s clear they still don’t play well together. Watching them on the field, it’s like they’ve never trained as a unit.

The only real moment of connection was an assist from Vini to Mbappé in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich. Outside of that, there’s been almost no teamwork.

While they might be good friends off the field and talk about enjoying playing together, it doesn’t show on the pitch. If I were the manager of Real Madrid next season, my first priority would be to take the job.

My second priority would be to get it in writing that one of these two stars must be sold this summer. It’s a tough call, but the results speak for themselves.

Managers Can’t Solve the Puzzle

Even Carlo Ancelotti, considered one of the greatest managers at handling big egos and superstar players, couldn’t make these two work. Then, Julen Lopetegui, a younger coach with deep knowledge of Real Madrid and how to manage egos there, also failed to get them both on the same page. Now, Carlo Ancelotti, known for his hands-off approach and focus on keeping players happy, has also struggled to make them click.

We’ve seen moments where Mbappé shined early in the season, but that was when the team was built around him, and Vinícius wasn’t a key player under Lopetegui. We also saw a period this season where Vinícius was on fire, but Mbappé was sidelined with an injury.

The simple fact is, they don’t perform well when they play together. It seems unlikely any manager can fix this partnership while also keeping both star players happy.

The Tough Decision Ahead

Vinícius Júnior’s contract is also approaching its end. Real Madrid has stated they will sell him this summer if he doesn’t sign a new deal.

This feels almost certain, especially given how long the club pursued Mbappé. But is selling Vini the right move?

Vinícius has proven he knows how to win with Real Madrid; they won trophies with him leading the charge. Mbappé has scored many goals and broken records since joining.

However, the real question for Real Madrid is whether scoring goals is more important than winning championships. These are uncomfortable but necessary questions the club must answer as they look to rebuild their future.
