Hell is Real! Invincible’s Darkest Secrets Revealed
Hell is real, demons are pro-human, and Earth is facing a new age of threats in the latest episode of Invincible. Mark Grayson embraces his heroic destiny while secrets about Earth's history and the Under-Realm are revealed. The episode sets up a major conflict with the return of Volcanica and hints at the reasons behind her rage.
Hell is Real! Invincible’s Darkest Secrets Revealed
The latest episode of Invincible just dropped a bombshell: Hell is a real place, and demons are surprisingly pro-human. Episode four, titled “Herm,” dives headfirst into the show’s deepest lore, introducing new characters and concepts that weren’t heavily featured in the comics. This episode sets the stage for Earth to enter a new era as the Viltrumites prepare their next move for conquest.
Mark’s Suit and His Path Forward
Before we journey to the underworld, we find Mark Grayson at Art’s shop, sporting his familiar black and blue suit. Creator Robert Kirkman explained that this suit represents Mark’s darkest and most intense moments, having been worn during major battles like the conquest fight and the Invincible War. It carries the weight of his more violent actions, including beating up Titan and killing Russ Livingston.
Art offers Mark his original yellow and blue suit, a symbol of his hopeful early days as a hero. Returning to this suit signifies Mark’s decision to forge his own heroic path, proving he won’t become like his father.
A Descent into the Under-Realm
The episode then catapults us into Hell, a place previously only hinted at. We revisit the scene from last season’s finale where Damien Darkblood spoke with Satan about a powerful being, who is now revealed to be Mark.
This exploration of Hell’s lore and the Earth’s core is new territory for many viewers, as it wasn’t a major focus in the comics. Damien’s sister, Domina (voiced by Kate Mulgrew), and the new ruler of the Under-Realm, Volcanica (voiced by Indira Varma), are introduced.
Demons, Magmanites, and a Summoning Spell
Volcanica, who appeared in issue 107 of the comics, unleashes lava monsters called Magmanites. These creatures were previously seen in season three when Darkseid captured superheroes. Back in Hell, Satan, voiced by Bruce Campbell, decides to summon the strongest surface dweller they know.
Using a ritual similar to the one that sent Damien back to Hell, they conjure Mark instead of Omni-Man, due to their shared DNA. This raises the question of why Oliver wasn’t summoned, but Mark is the logical choice as the next strongest being.
Kohor’s Evolution and the True Nature of Hell
Meanwhile, Riley and Kohor are on Earth, with Kohor finally choosing a female host, though he still manages to be misogynistic about it. Damien explains that Hell, demons, and Satan are real, but not as humans understand them.
He reveals a power struggle: Volcanica has overthrown Satan and now controls Hell. If she succeeds in releasing the Vile, an ancient enemy, it would mean the end of humanity.
Earth’s Six Ages and the Viltrumite Threat
Damien also reveals that Earth has gone through six ages, most of which humans are unaware of. The giant monsters seen today are remnants of the second age, while the first age saw even more powerful creatures. The fifth age was the era of demons and Satan, who led a war against the Vile for millions of years, imprisoning them in the Under-Realm.
This ancient battle made human evolution possible. The Viltrumites conquering Earth could simply mark the start of a seventh age, ruled by a new species.
The Universe’s Moral Ambiguity
Damien also states that there’s no evidence of Heaven in this universe, suggesting a lack of moral balance. This might cause Mark stress, especially after his conversation with Art about crossing the line by killing Russ. The idea that good deeds might not balance out his sins could weigh heavily on him.
Cerberus, Bruce Campbell’s Cameo, and Volcanica’s Defeat
The episode features a three-headed Cerberus, banished for failing to defeat Volcanica. Mark defeats Cerberus, drawing parallels to Hercules. Satan, voiced by Bruce Campbell, delivers a classic “Yeah, baby!” line, a nod to his iconic role as Ash Williams from The Evil Dead.
After a tough fight, Mark manages to defeat Volcanica by smashing her head, though she isn’t killed. One of the Vile creatures appears, but Mark dispatches it easily, though his suit is damaged.
A New Beginning for Mark, a Pregnant Secret, and Nolan’s Return
Art provides Mark with a new yellow and blue suit, signaling he’s ready to be a hero again. Satan allows Damien to return to Earth, a development that will surely complicate things for Cecil Stedman. Eve reveals to William that she is pregnant, a secret she hasn’t yet told Mark.
Meanwhile, Debbie plans to sell their house and move in with Paul. Just as Eve is about to tell Mark about her pregnancy, Nolan and Allen arrive in their Coalition of Planets garb.
Satan’s Warning and the Mystery Behind Volcanica’s Rage
The episode ends with Damien scaling a building on Earth, as Satan calls to him. Satan reveals that Volcanica is enraged and wishes to wage war on the surface, and he suspects humans are the cause. He even suggests he might need to return to Earth himself.
The question remains: what are humans doing to provoke such ancient wrath? It could be related to Doc Seismic’s past actions or the ripple effects of the Viltrumite invasion.
Damien’s reaction, “I was afraid of this,” suggests this is a long-standing problem he’s been aware of. The implications are vast, as Earth faces new threats from both the cosmos and the depths below. With Mark embracing his role as a hero, Eve’s secret, and Nolan’s return, the universe of Invincible is more complex and dangerous than ever.
