Iran Downs US Jet, Fires on Rescue Craft
A US F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down by apparent Iranian fire, sparking a search for a missing pilot while a second crew member was rescued. Three US aircraft involved in the rescue mission were also hit by Iranian fire, contradicting recent presidential claims about Iran's air defense capabilities.
US Jet Shot Down, Rescue Efforts Targeted by Iran
A US F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet was shot down, apparently by Iranian fire, in a dangerous situation that has sparked a race against time to find a missing airman. A second crew member was rescued alive and flown out of the country for medical care.
Iranian state television released photos that appear to show wreckage of the American jet, with weapons experts confirming to NBC News that the images likely depict an F-15. This marks the first time a manned US aircraft has been downed behind enemy lines during the current conflict.
Search and Rescue Missions Under Fire
US aircraft were seen flying low over a rugged, mountainous area, searching for the missing airmen. The urgent mission aimed to locate the crew before Iranian forces could. However, the search and rescue operation itself came under attack.
Three US aircraft involved in the effort were reportedly hit by Iranian fire. According to a US official, a single pilot flying an A-10 Warthog was struck by this fire.
Pilot Ejects Safely After A-10 Hit
The official stated that the A-10 pilot managed to make it to Kuwaiti airspace, where they safely ejected from the damaged aircraft before it crashed. Videos circulating appear to show Iranian forces firing at US helicopters.
Two Black Hawk helicopters involved in the search were also hit, the official confirmed. Minor injuries were reported among the US service members on board these helicopters.
Contradiction to Presidential Claims
This incident directly contradicts recent statements made by President Trump. Just two days prior, the President asserted that Iran possessed no anti-aircraft equipment and that their radar systems were completely destroyed.
However, the events clearly show that Iran maintains active air defense capabilities. These include shoulder-fired missiles and guns, all of which pose a significant threat to aircraft operating in the region.
Bounty Placed on Missing Airman
Adding to the tension, Iranian state television announced a bounty for the capture of the missing American airman. An anchor on the broadcast stated that a substantial reward would be given to anyone who captured the enemy pilot alive and handed them over to the police.
This reward is estimated to be around $60,000. This development raises concerns about the safety and potential treatment of the downed airman.
Previous Aircraft Incidents
The US military has experienced other aircraft losses since the conflict began. Four other manned US aircraft have gone down in recent times. Three jets in Kuwait were lost due to friendly fire incidents.
Six service members died last month when a fueling plane crashed in Iraq. The F-15, a reliable and widely used aircraft in the US military, has been a frequent presence in operations over Iran.
Looking Ahead
The focus now shifts to the ongoing efforts to locate the missing F-15 pilot and the potential consequences of Iran targeting US aircraft during a search and rescue mission. The coming days will likely see increased scrutiny of Iran’s air defense capabilities and the US military’s response to these direct attacks.
