“I was like, ‘I mean, being in Texas would be great. Like I was thinking about state taxes.

As San Antonio and Dallas emerged as the top two possibilities, Flagg felt his composure being tested. He knew he had to suppress his growing excitement. The pressure to appear stoic intensified as the moment of truth neared.

“So, then I was just like, ‘All right, well, now I just got to contain my excitement,'” he said. Even with his teammates trying to provoke a reaction, Flagg held firm. It was a difficult task to keep his true feelings hidden.

The Interview Challenge

Moments after the lottery concluded and Dallas was revealed as the No. 1 pick, Flagg faced an immediate interview. The reporters asked him questions about heading to Dallas, putting him on the spot. He struggled to answer without revealing his genuine enthusiasm.

“And then they brought me to do interview like seconds after the lottery happened. And they’re asking me questions about Dallas, and I’m just like I’m trying to answer it without like saying, ‘Yeah, I’m going there,'” Flagg described. The rapid transition from the tense lottery drawing to a public interview proved challenging.

Dallas Was Unexpected

Adding to the surprise, Flagg admitted that Dallas was not initially on his radar as a likely destination. He had considered other teams more seriously throughout the pre-draft process. The Mavericks securing the top pick was a genuine surprise to him.

“Like Dallas was never a thought. Like that it wasn’t like I never thought about coming to Dallas,” Flagg stated.
