American Tourist Describes Calm Amidst Dubai Strikes
DUBAI, UAE – As tensions escalate across the Middle East, American businesswoman Christy Elmer finds herself stranded in Dubai, sheltering in place at her hotel. Despite the proximity to ongoing conflict, Elmer shared her experience, highlighting a sense of security fostered by the United Arab Emirates’ robust defense systems and the calm demeanor of the local population.
Navigating the Conflict: A Day in Dubai
Speaking from her hotel in Dubai, Elmer described a relatively quiet day on the ground, punctuated by a single intercepted strike early Tuesday morning. “Today’s actually been quite calm. We had one strike this morning that was intercepted right over our heads this morning, probably around 8 a.m., and then since then it’s been relatively quiet,” she reported. While fighter jets were a common sight, Elmer noted a significant reduction in activity and anxiety over the past 24 hours.
Elmer expressed her admiration for the UAE’s government and its defense capabilities. “We have been so impressed with the UAE’s government, they have done such an incredible job with their defense system,” she stated. She recalled the initial shock of explosions and feeling the shockwaves when the conflict first began on Saturday afternoon. However, the effectiveness of the UAE’s defense systems, which she estimated intercepted around 93% of threats, has instilled a sense of safety.
“We felt that they’ve done an incredible job and the hotel staff has been incredible making sure that we know what the safety routes are anything that we need my company has also done an incredible job keeping us updated there’s a crisis app they’re checking in so we honestly feel quite fortunate in this situation to be where we are.”
Resilience and Routine: Life in Dubai
Despite the underlying threat, daily life in Dubai appears to be continuing with a remarkable degree of normalcy for many. Elmer recounted a visit to a local mall to gather supplies, observing that while fewer people were present, activities such as grocery shopping and children playing in a park were still occurring.
“People are very very calm. We went to the mall yesterday to pick up some supplies and people were out grocery shopping, kids were in their jumping park in the mall. There was a lot less people, but I would I WOULD SAY IT WAS STILL VERY CALM AND SOME PEOPLE STILL TRYING TO GO ABOUT SORT OF THEIR NORMAL ACTIVITY,” Elmer observed. This resilience and attempt to maintain routine underscore the confidence many residents and visitors have in the local authorities and security measures.
Flight Cancellations and Hopes for Return
The immediate concern for many stranded tourists, including Elmer, is the ability to depart the region. Dubai International Airport has seen a limited resumption of flights, with the first flight out since the airport was impacted making its final call for takeoff. However, Elmer’s own travel plans have been repeatedly disrupted.
“We’ve had flights canceled every day. In fact, my flight for tonight and tomorrow has both been canceled,” she explained. With flights tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, Elmer expressed cautious optimism. “So the hope is maybe Wednesday is our chance to get back home. Fingers crossed for you,” she added.
Preparedness and Perspective Amidst Uncertainty
With warnings from officials like former President Trump suggesting the conflict could extend into the next month, preparedness is a consideration. Elmer indicated that if prolonged, they would adapt. “I think, you know, if we get to that point, we’ll figure out what to do. You know, I think the government’s made it very clear that hotels will continue to sort of keep people. So we’ll work through that,” she said.
Elmer also emphasized a broader perspective, acknowledging that their situation, while inconvenient, is not comparable to the hardship faced by others in the region. “Honestly, we’re trying to just keep good perspective here, right? We have service people in harm’s way, people who’ve lost their lives. And so from our perspective, we’re in a nice place that’s taking care of us and, you know, feel like the the government’s really worried about their tourists too and making sure we’re protected. So as much as we’d like to get home, we feel like we’re not the priority and we’ll just kind of keep hoping for the best when it’s time for us,” she articulated.
Government Communication and Support
Elmer confirmed that she and other U.S. citizens are registered with the State Department and are receiving regular updates via text messages. While direct intervention hasn’t been necessary, the communication channels are in place should they be needed. “We’re registered through the system. And so we’ve been getting text messages. And there’s, you know, contact information if we need to reach out, we haven’t felt we’ve needed to reach out. So we feel very comfortable that, you know, they’re in contact as needed, depending on what happens,” she stated.
In addition to federal guidance, the local government in Dubai is also providing alerts for critical situations. “And then the local government is sending out text messages as well, and we get sort of alerts when anything is critical happening,” Elmer added. This dual-channel communication provides a layered approach to ensuring the safety and awareness of U.S. citizens in the region.
Looking Ahead
As flights remain unpredictable, the focus for stranded travelers like Christy Elmer is on maintaining calm, staying informed, and awaiting the opportunity to return home. The resilience demonstrated by Dubai’s infrastructure and its people, coupled with effective communication from both local and federal authorities, offers a measure of reassurance amidst the broader regional instability. The coming days will be critical in determining when international travel from Dubai will fully resume and when those stranded will be able to depart.
