Senator Slams Defense Secretary Over Iran War Civilian Deaths
Democratic senators are demanding answers from Defense Secretary Hegseth regarding civilian deaths in the Iran war. Citing specific incidents and program cuts aimed at preventing casualties, Senator Chris Van Hollen criticizes Hegseth's "complete disregard for civilian harm." Lawmakers are also questioning Hegseth's decisions on military vaccine policies and internal Pentagon disputes.
Senator Criticizes Defense Secretary on Civilian Casualties in Iran
Democratic lawmakers are raising serious concerns about Defense Secretary Hegseth’s handling of the war in Iran. Eleven senators have sent an open letter demanding an explanation for cuts to programs designed to prevent civilian deaths. They point to at least four incidents where U.S. military actions have been blamed for civilian harm, including a missile strike on an elementary school that reportedly killed 175 people.
Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, spoke about the situation. He stated that Secretary Hegseth has shown a “complete disregard for civilian harm and deaths” in the conflict. While 13 American service members have died, Van Hollen noted that around 1,700 civilians have also been killed in Iran.
Concerns Over Program Cuts and Rules of Engagement
This rise in civilian casualties occurred as Secretary Hegseth was reportedly dismantling systems within the Defense Department and regional commands. These systems were put in place to help reduce harm to innocent civilians during military operations. Senator Van Hollen highlighted that Hegseth had previously called the rules of engagement “stupid.” These rules are specifically designed to prevent the deaths of innocent people caught in conflict zones.
When asked about upcoming votes to increase funding for the Pentagon, Senator Van Hollen expressed his opposition. He stated, “I’m against providing one more dime for this illegal war, which is making us less safe, which is making us worse off every day.” He argued that the war, initiated by Donald Trump, is contrary to his campaign promises of avoiding new wars and lowering prices.
Mandatory Vaccine Program Changes Questioned
The conversation also touched on Secretary Hegseth’s decision to end the mandatory vaccine program for military members. Senator Van Hollen believes this move could put service members at greater risk of illness. He explained that vaccines are crucial for controlling contagious diseases that can spread easily among groups.
“So what Pete Hexeth is doing, is putting the health of more of our men and women at risk every day here in the United States as well as those overseas,” Van Hollen stated. He views this as another instance where the Defense Secretary is not prioritizing the country’s best interests.
Reported Rift Within the Pentagon
The interview also addressed reports of a possible disagreement between Secretary Hegseth and Army Secretary Dan Driscoll. This reported rift seems to stem from the firing of a military officer, an action Driscoll apparently opposed. Driscoll even visited the officer’s home to show support after the firing, which happened while Driscoll was on vacation.
While not confirming all the details, Senator Van Hollen acknowledged significant dissatisfaction within the Pentagon. “There’s a lot of displeasure among folks at the Pentagon, including senior military officers about decisions that Pete Hexeth is making,” he said. He believes Hegseth is creating “chaos” both internationally and within the defense department.
Widespread Discontent Over Civilian Harm Prevention
Van Hollen reiterated his concern about Hegseth’s decision to cut by 90 percent the personnel involved in preventing civilian deaths. He noted that many military personnel understand the importance of reducing civilian harm, both ethically and for national interests. The senator concluded that there is widespread unrest regarding the Defense Secretary’s actions.
“He should be fired. I mean, he was unqualified from the beginning, but he should absolutely be fired for the good of our country,” Van Hollen asserted. He suggested that Hegseth’s approach to warfare and his interpretation of rules of engagement are deeply flawed.
Concerns About Religious Interpretations and War Policy
The senator also questioned whether Secretary Hegseth’s personal beliefs might be influencing his decisions. Van Hollen described Hegseth’s views as a “strange interpretation of his Christian faith” when discussing actions like bombing power plants and bridges, which he sees as potential war crimes. He contrasted this with calls for peace from religious leaders like the Pope.
Van Hollen expressed worry about the current situation, stating, “Between Donald Trump and Pete Hexeth, we’re going through a very dangerous time.” He felt that Hegseth was trying to frame the conflict as a religious war, while others were advocating for peace.
The senators await a formal response from Secretary Hegseth regarding their concerns. Their next step will be to vote on increased funding for the Pentagon, a decision Senator Van Hollen has stated he will oppose.
