Blazers Surge Towards Playoffs With Newfound Grit
The energy in the arena felt like playoff basketball, even though the regular season isn’t quite over. The Blazers delivered a knockout performance in their latest game, showing a toughness that’s been building for months. This team, once struggling to close out games, is now fighting back and delivering decisive blows, looking every bit like a playoff contender.
Team Maturity Fuels Late-Season Turnaround
Looking back at the start of the season, the Blazers are a different team. “I feel like this group came a long way,” said one player. “Especially, you know, we had what we had in the beginning of the season but just doing the season, just seeing our progress as a team.” The team’s improved maturity and understanding of how to win close games have been key. “We’ve been struggling the past two years being able to close games better,” a player noted. “So, yeah, I think we we always getting better, always improving all the areas.”
This newfound ability to finish strong was on full display in their recent victory. Unlike earlier in the season when they might have faltered, the Blazers punched back when their opponent tried to make a run. “In November, December, you guys, I mean, you won the game by 20. Well, you know, you didn’t win at the last second. Like you came back and delivered a knockout shot,” a commentator observed, highlighting the team’s transformation.
Focus Sharpens After All-Star Break
A significant shift in focus seemed to occur after the All-Star break. “I feel like after All-Star break, like really like when we came back and started practicing, you know, coach started writing like every game day like the standings on the board and where we were and what we had to do to put ourselves in a good position for playing in playoffs,” a player explained. This added attention to detail and a clear understanding of their playoff goals has paid off.
The players are also feeling better physically, thanks to improved routines. “I feel like I was I was losing a lot of weight my first two years. And you know, it’s all about finding a routine, creating a routine to make this 82 games go as smooth as possible and really taking care of your body and all the little things,” one player shared. This dedication to taking care of their bodies has helped them play consistently throughout the long season.
International Flavor: Avdija, Camara, and Clingan’s Journeys
The podcast also delved into the backgrounds of several players, including Deni Avdija, Toumani Camara, and Donovan Clingan. Avdija spoke about his upbringing in Brussels, Belgium, where basketball wasn’t the most popular sport. “Everybody’s into soccer, even hockey or tennis is bigger than basketball,” he said. He recalled having to wait for soccer players to finish on the court before he could play basketball.
Camara shared his journey from Belgium to Hollywood, Florida, for his first taste of the US. “It was like a dream. Like the American dream for real,” he described. He then moved on to the University of Georgia, where he was impressed by the talent and work ethic of future NBA stars. “No doubt like his work ethic, his mindset, the way he’s he approached everything was really impressive, especially as his age,” Camara said of a highly touted prospect.
The discussion also touched on the physicality and toughness of the game, with players debating the fine line between drawing fouls and “gross foul baiting.” One player defended his style, saying, “I drive so much time though. I didn’t I do it maybe one.” Another countered, “I think he always drives super hard to the basket and there’s a lot of time he gets fouled.” The conversation highlighted how players adapt to the rules and find ways to be effective. The term “Turbo” was even coined to describe a player’s relentless drives to the basket, creating opportunities for both himself and his teammates.
