Hendrickson Holdout Stalls Market Amidst QB Carousel

The NFL free agency landscape was a whirlwind yesterday, with deals flying and surprising moves reshaping teams across the league. While quarterbacks like Malik Willis and Tua Tagovailoa found new homes, the most significant lingering story remains the contract standoff involving star pass rusher Trey Hendrickson.

Hendrickson’s Market Value Dispute

ESPN’s Adam Schefter provided the latest on the highly sought-after defensive end, confirming Hendrickson is in contact with multiple teams but is yet to find an offer that meets his expectations. The crux of the issue lies in Hendrickson’s valuation compared to recent blockbuster deals for his peers.

“You see the Houston Texans go out and give Danielle Hunter a $40 million a year extension. You see yesterday the Carolina Panthers shock the NFL and give Jaylen Phillips $30 million a year. Trey Hendrickson sees himself in the company of those kinds of players,” Schefter explained. “And so you would think that there would be a corresponding contract in that vicinity. But if there’s not a team out there that’s willing to give you 40 or $30 million, sometimes it takes a player a little bit of time to understand how the market works like that and to accept that just because Danielle Hunter might get 40, you might not get 40.”

Schefter emphasized Hendrickson’s determination: “He’s a very strong-minded, prideful person. He wants to get his price and until he feels like he does, he’s not willing to compromise on that.” This unwavering stance suggests a potential holdout until his demands are met, leaving teams in limbo.

Quarterback Musical Chairs: Willis and Tua Land New Roles

The quarterback market saw significant movement. The Miami Dolphins made a splash by signing former Green Bay Packers QB Malik Willis to a three-year, $45 million deal. Despite limited action in his first two years, Willis showed flashes of potential when given the opportunity.

Perhaps the most surprising quarterback transaction involved Tua Tagovailoa. After being released by the Dolphins in the morning, he quickly landed with the Atlanta Falcons on a one-year deal. This move places Tua in a unique situation, as he’ll compete with Michael Penix Jr., who is recovering from a torn ACL, for the starting job.

  • Miami Dolphins: Signed Malik Willis (QB) to a 3-year, $45 million deal.
  • Atlanta Falcons: Signed Tua Tagovailoa (QB) to a 1-year deal. He will compete with Michael Penix Jr.

The quarterback carousel also leaves teams like the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints with lingering questions, while Kyler Murray and Geno Smith remain prominent figures in ongoing quarterback discussions.

Other Notable Moves and Emerging Storylines

Beyond the quarterback drama, several other key moves occurred:

  • Kenneth Walker III (RB): The Seattle Seahawks running back, and Super Bowl MVP, signed a three-year, $28 million deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. He becomes the fourth reigning Super Bowl MVP to switch teams the following season.
  • Mike Evans (WR): After 12 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Evans signed a three-year, $60 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers, with $16 million guaranteed. He played a career-low eight games last year due to injuries.
  • Travis Etienne (RB): The New Orleans Saints inked the former Jaguars running back to a four-year, $52 million contract. This move immediately raises questions about the future of Alvin Kamara in New Orleans, potentially opening the door for a trade.

Second-Year Quarterbacks Poised for Growth

Dan Orlovski highlighted a positive trend for second-year quarterbacks, citing the strategic moves made by several teams:

“How the second-year quarterbacks are all set up. I loved what Tennessee did for Cam Ward. One, the addition of Juan Delale Robinson was really good for just that friendly receiver. I thought New Orleans getting ETN and guard David Edwards was really good for Tyler Shuck. The stuff that the Giants did for Jackson Dart when it comes to signing Isaiah likely as a free agent tight end and the way they’re going to use him. I like that all three organizations didn’t necessarily only go with just offensive guys. Tennessee is building a defense for Cam Ward. The Giants kept Illuminor, which I thought was a big deal, but also added that pass-catching tight end threat. And Tyler Shuck, the commitment that New Orleans is making to saying, ‘Hey, we’re going to get you a good back and protect you from the interior part.’ I thought the second-year quarterbacks are set up to have really good second seasons.”

Rams Emerge as Super Bowl Favorites, Eagles Face Uncertainty

Dominique Foxworth declared the Los Angeles Rams as the clear Super Bowl favorites following their aggressive moves, particularly in the secondary. The acquisition of a cornerback to complement their existing talent is seen as a significant upgrade.

Conversely, the Philadelphia Eagles are experiencing a period of significant roster turnover. With key departures like Jaylen Phillips and a lack of major free agent signings thus far, Peter Schrager advised patience:

“The Philadelphia Eagles. You know, March and April is usually Howie Rosen. Hy Roseman season SZN and they signed nobody but they lost quite a bit. Jaylen Phillips who everyone thought was going to resign with the Eagles took a huge payday from the Panthers. He leaves Nico Dean gone. Reed Blankenship gone. Dodson gone. Last year they lost Josh Sweat and Milton Williams and Darius Slay on that first day. The Eagles it’s been a bloodletting. Everyone’s leaving and Jeff Stoutland’s no longer there as the offensive line coach. And yet everyone’s looking and saying Howie, what are you going to do? What’s the move? Well, I think of the finance world and sometimes the best moves are the ones you don’t. No one’s ever won a Super Bowl on day one of the free agent market. I would say just hang tight, Eagles fans. Let’s see what Howie Roseman has up his sleeve.”

The free agency period is far from over, and all eyes remain on whether Trey Hendrickson will secure the contract he desires, and what other seismic shifts might be on the horizon.
