LeBron’s Historic Night Leads Lakers in Playoff Opener
LeBron James made history with a vintage performance in the Lakers' Game 1 win, while Donovan Mitchell, Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Jamal Murray, and Nikola Jokic also led their teams to victories on the opening day of the NBA playoffs. The Lakers secured a win despite missing key players, showcasing LeBron's all-around brilliance.
LeBron Makes History in Lakers’ Game 1 Win
The NBA playoffs kicked off with a bang, and LeBron James made sure to start with an opening statement. While Kevin Durant was sidelined with a knee injury and the Lakers were missing Austin Reaves and D’Angelo Russell, LeBron embraced his old ways, doing a little bit of everything to lead his team. He dished out 10 assists in the first half alone, becoming the oldest player ever with that many assists in a playoff game and tying his personal playoff best for a half.
At 41 years old, LeBron showed he still has plenty of “grown man strength,” as he put it, dominating the paint and scoring efficiently. The Lakers, as a team, shot an incredible 60% from the field and 53% from three-point range.
Luke Kennard was lights out from deep, hitting all five of his three-point attempts on his way to a game-high 27 points. The Lakers’ offense was remarkably efficient, attempting only 66 shots, the fewest in an NBA game over the last three seasons, but making each one count.
LeBron finished the game with 19 points, 13 rebounds, and 8 assists, guiding the Lakers to a Game 1 victory. “We understood the situation that we’re going to be in and we understand how our… Offensively how we’re going to play had to completely change,” LeBron explained after the game when asked about the game plan.
“We spent a lot of time… Honing in on what we need to do offensively because it’s just a different style how we play now when you’re missing so much.”
Brunson and Towns Power Knicks Past Hawks
In the Eastern Conference, Jalen Brunson set the tone early for the New York Knicks against the Atlanta Hawks. Brunson poured in 19 points in the first quarter alone, the most by a Knicks player in an opening playoff quarter in the play-by-play era. He showcased his scoring ability with sharp pull-up jumpers and aggressive drives to the basket.
The Hawks kept it close, with CJ McCollum and Bogdan Bogdanovic making plays, including a late first-half three-pointer from Bogdanovic to cut the deficit to two at the break. However, the fourth quarter belonged to the Knicks, specifically to Karl-Anthony Towns. Towns hit a deep three-pointer to extend the Knicks’ lead to 11 and later scored an “and-one” to emphasize his dominance.
Towns finished with 25 points and 8 rebounds, playing with the aggression and emotion the Knicks need. “He was a leader out there. He was aggressive.
He didn’t settle,” said analyst Quinton Richardson about Towns’ performance. “He played with a lot of emotion and a lot of passion.” The Knicks ultimately won Game 1 by a score of 113-102, with Brunson and Towns combining for 53 points.
Jokic and Murray Lead Nuggets Over T-Wolves
The Western Conference playoffs also got underway with a matchup between the Denver Nuggets and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Jamal Murray was the offensive catalyst for the Nuggets, scoring a game-high 30 points, including tough layups and a key “and-one” play that helped Denver build a 12-point lead.
Tensions flared in the third quarter when Minnesota’s Jaden McDaniels was called for a foul on Nikola Jokic and then shoved him. Aaron Gordon stepped in to defend his star, leading to both players being separated. The incident seemed to fuel Jokic, who immediately responded with a floater to extend Denver’s lead.
Jokic delivered another masterful performance, recording a triple-double with 25 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists. The Nuggets won Game 1, 116-105. The duo of Jokic and Murray matched Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen for the most playoff games with at least 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists each, with eight such games.
Mitchell’s Scoring Spree Lifts Cavs Over Raptors
Donovan Mitchell put on a show for the Cleveland Cavaliers against the Toronto Raptors, scoring 32 points to lead his team to a Game 1 victory. Mitchell started hot, hitting a three-pointer to tie the game early and later executing a steal and fast-break layup to give the Cavs a four-point lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Cavaliers extended their lead in the second quarter, with Evan Mobley contributing with strong post play. A significant storyline was the return of Max Strus, who missed the first 67 games of the season with a broken foot. Strus scored eight straight points for Cleveland in the third quarter and finished with a playoff career-high 24 points.
Mitchell continued his scoring barrage with a step-back three in the third. The dynamic duo of Mitchell and Strus combined for 82 points or assists in the game, accounting for 65% of Cleveland’s scoring. The Cavaliers secured a 13-point win in Game 1.
