Florida Republican Representative Cory Mills is facing renewed pressure to resign from Congress following serious allegations of assault and misconduct. These claims have resurfaced, drawing comparisons to other lawmakers who have recently left office due to similar accusations. The situation puts a spotlight on the Republican party’s handling of ethical concerns within its ranks.

Assault Allegation and Investigation

In late February 2025, a woman reported an assault at Mills’ Washington D.C. Home, telling a 911 operator and police that she had been attacked.

She appeared to have visible injuries, which usually leads to an arrest. However, the responding officer did not make an arrest at the time.

After reviewing body camera footage, police later classified the incident as domestic violence assault. A federal prosecutor appointed by President Trump then denied a request for a police search warrant.

The woman who made the accusation later retracted her statement. Representative Mills has denied any wrongdoing in connection with this incident.

Protective Order and Harassment Claims

This is not the first time Mills has faced serious accusations. Last fall, another woman who had previously dated Mills was granted a temporary protective order against him. A judge ordered Mills to stay at least 500 feet away from her.

The woman reported receiving harassing messages and threats of revenge porn from Mills for months after their relationship ended. Mills testified in court that he never intended to share intimate images of the woman and no longer possesses them. These events have led to significant scrutiny of his personal conduct.

Calls for Resignation and Party Scrutiny

Investigative reporter Roger Sollenberger, who has spent over a year looking into Mills’ background, believes the representative should be removed from Congress immediately. Sollenberger stated that his year of reporting, including speaking with hundreds of people and reviewing thousands of pages of documents, led him to this conclusion.

Sollenberger highlighted an “astounding array of allegations” against Mills, noting that while Mills hasn’t been accused of the same type of sexual assault as Representative Eric Swalwell, there are still serious claims of sexual misconduct. He has spoken with ex-girlfriends who expressed fear and described Mills as a “psychopath.”

Mills Defends Himself, Critics Remain Unconvinced

Representative Mills has defended himself by distinguishing his situation from that of Representatives Swalwell and Tony Gonzales. He pointed out that he is not married and has not faced complaints from staffers or interns. Mills dismissed the comparisons as a “political Democrat take.”

However, critics like Tara Setmayer, co-founder and CEO of The Seneca Project, find this defense unconvincing. Setmayer stated, “If you’re explaining, you’re losing.” She argued that comparing oneself to others accused of misconduct is not a valid defense and that moral character is essential for a stable government.

Broader Implications and Political Climate

Setmayer suggested that the current situation with Mills reflects a broader issue within the Republican party, influenced by former President Donald Trump’s own character. She believes that holding Republicans accountable for misconduct is difficult because it would also require addressing Trump’s actions.

Setmayer also drew parallels to the #MeToo movement, suggesting a “political reckoning” is occurring regarding women’s experiences with politicians. She praised Democrats for taking swift action against such behavior, emphasizing the need for moral credibility. Setmayer concluded that people in Florida deserve better representation.

Internal Republican Concerns and Chief of Staff Resignation

Even within the Republican party, there are significant concerns about Mills. Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert remarked that Republicans have been trying to protect certain individuals and that those with histories of alleged abuse have no place in Congress. She expressed frustration with protecting people who may be victimizing women.

Another striking development was the recent resignation of Mills’ chief of staff. Her resignation letter included the phrase, “The horrors persist, but I do not,” which has been widely interpreted as a significant criticism of the situation within Mills’ office. This, along with comments from other Republican women in Congress, suggests growing internal dissent.

Mistrust and Future Outlook

Sollenberger reported that many Republicans on Capitol Hill view Mills with mistrust, with some believing he is a “pathological liar.” He has spoken with several Republican members, including some in leadership positions, who feel Mills should be removed from Congress. These internal discussions highlight a deep dissatisfaction with his presence.

Despite the serious allegations and internal party concerns, the narrow Republican majority in the House of Representatives complicates any immediate action. There is also the financial aspect, with Mills reportedly being outraised four to one by his Democratic opponent.
