Historic Gold for Team USA, Knight Leads the Charge
The United States is celebrating a monumental achievement in international hockey, as both the men’s and women’s teams captured gold medals at the Winter Olympics. This historic sweep marks the first time since women’s hockey became a medal event in 1998 that the U.S. has achieved this dual triumph. It also represents the fourth instance in Olympic history where a single nation has claimed both men’s and women’s hockey gold, with Canada being the only other nation to accomplish this feat, taking silver this year.
At the heart of the women’s victory was veteran forward Hilary Knight, a five-time Olympian and now a gold medalist. Knight, instrumental in the team’s journey, reflected on the thrilling gold medal game where she scored the game-tying goal in the final two minutes, ultimately leading to overtime glory.
“We actually had a power break which is the Olympic equivalent to a TV timeout and um had a good feeling about it because we were able to draw up some plays and little double spread there at the blue line. Leila has the puck on her stick and you just have to find the the front of the net to try and tip it. Um and fortunately I was able to take away the goalie’s eyes and tip the puck up and we found the back of the net and the rest is history after Megan Keller does her amazing tow drag and finds the back of the net in overtime.”
Knight described the pivotal moment, emphasizing the team’s preparation and execution. “It’s just this team is just so much fun to be a part of and I’m really glad that we were finally rewarded with that kind of success at the end of the journey,” she added.
Individual Brilliance Meets Team Success
Beyond the team’s ultimate prize, Knight also etched her name in the record books, setting new United States career Olympic goals and points records. Despite these individual accolades, Knight maintained a team-first perspective.
“Yeah, honestly, I’m not ever focused about the individual records. I believe, you know, if you focus on the team and um putting your best foot forward with the team and and doing all your responsibilities, the other things will come.”
She acknowledged the significance of the records as a testament to her dedication and the support system around her. “It’s a huge testament obviously to the the body of work that I’ve put together off ice on ice and also about the people that have really sacrificed and helped me get to that position to be at such a high level of play for so long. So I’m really grateful for teammates, friends, family, med staff, support staff. It takes a a lot of people behind the scenes to be able to have one player achieve their and realize their dreams and find success.”
A Gold Medal and a Proposal
Adding another layer of unforgettable moments to her Olympic experience, Knight also got engaged to fellow American Olympian, speed skater Brittney Boe, while in Italy. When asked which event made her more nervous, the proposal or the final minutes of the gold medal game, Knight didn’t hesitate.
“I’m not going to lie, popping the question. I had the wobbliest legs ever. I’ve never felt anything like that before.”
She described the engagement as a “special moment,” allowing them to celebrate their respective Olympic careers and each other. “To be able to sort of cap everything off and come full circle moment for us and celebrate one another forever was extremely special and I’m fortunate we got to do it together.”
Addressing Distasteful Remarks
Knight also addressed comments made by President Trump regarding the men’s team and an implied invitation to the women’s team. She characterized the remarks as a “distasteful joke” that unfortunately overshadowed the incredible achievements of the women’s team and women in sports.
“It was unfortunate, but uh yeah, I think you know, we’re really focusing on celebrating all great things that have come out of the Olympics and feeling the love and the support and getting back in our respective communities and sharing this journey with them and that’s what it’s all about and that’s what makes this moment super special.”
Knight emphasized the genuine support and respect between the men’s and women’s hockey programs. She noted that the quick misstep by the President’s comments overshadowed the positive connections and mutual cheering within the Olympic village and on professional stages. “I think this is a just a really good learning point um to really focus on you know, how we talk about women not only in sport but in industry women aren’t less than and uh our achievements shouldn’t be overshadowed by any anything else other than uh how great they are.”
What’s Next for Hilary Knight?
With her Olympic dreams realized, Knight is already setting her sights on new challenges. She is returning to the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) with the new Seattle expansion team, the Seattle Torrens.
Her next major goal is clear: “I think a Walter Cup final would be kind of on the next uh in my crosshairs in the PWHL. I’m I’m back in Seattle and uh we’re a new expansion team in the PWHL and putting the Seattle Torren on the map is of uh of great interest and bringing home a championship to the Pacific Northwest is going to be sort of that next goal.”
Knight also expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of a celebratory trip to Las Vegas with Team USA, responding to an invitation from Flavor Flav.
“I hope so. I mean, you can’t turn down a Flavor Flave invite, right? Like, it’s just like you know, so I don’t know um exact dates. I’m hoping everyone can make it. It’s really tough with schedules right now. Everyone’s going back to NCAA or their pro leagues and whatnot. So, um, but you know, one of the things about winning and cementing that legacy is you get more touch points together.”
As Knight looks to the future, her drive for competition and team success remains as strong as ever, promising more exciting chapters in her already storied career.
