Dune 3 Footage Hints at Paul’s Dark Reign
New footage from Dune: Part Three shown at CinemaCon reveals a dark future for Paul Atreides, 17 years into his reign. The film will explore Paul's galactic holy war and his transformation into a tyrannical emperor, with Chani questioning his humanity. Director Denis Villeneuve confirms it's his last Dune film.
Dune 3 Footage Hints at Paul’s Dark Reign
Fans are buzzing after a sneak peek of Dune: Part Three, based on Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah, was shown at CinemaCon. Director Denis Villeneuve and stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya were on hand to introduce the footage, which promises a much darker turn for Paul Atreides.
Paul’s Reign of Terror Begins
The film picks up 17 years after Paul’s rise to power on Arrakis. The new footage shows Paul as a figure wrestling with his own terrifying future, a vision he desperately tried to avoid. Chalamet described Paul as becoming his “worst vision.” Jason Momoa, returning as Duncan Idaho (in a new form), tells Paul he’s destroyed thousands of worlds and is beyond redemption. This sets a very dark tone for the continuation of the epic saga.
A Glimpse of the Holy War
According to reports from CinemaCon attendees, the movie will explore the galactic holy war, or jihad, that has raged for 17 years. This war is Paul’s creation, a conflict where everyone must submit or die. While Paul controls the vital spice and thus much of the universe, opposition still exists.
Opening Scene Reveals Harsh Realities
The first described scene shows Fremen soldiers, who have lived their entire lives on the desert planet Arrakis, experiencing rain for the first time as they descend onto a new world. Their awe is short-lived. An ambush quickly decimates their ships and soldiers with intense gunfire and towering structures that unleash anti-aircraft attacks. The surviving Fremen are left in shock as their comrades fall.
Foresight Clouded, Humanity Questioned
A new trailer revealed during the event featured a conversation between Paul and a ghola (a clone) of his old friend Duncan Idaho. Duncan warns Paul that he is beyond saving. Paul himself admits that his ability to see the future, a power that has guided him, is now clouded. Chani, played by Zendaya, questions Paul’s humanity directly, asking, “How does it feel to be human like everyone else?” This line ends the presented footage, highlighting Chani’s growing disillusionment.
Chani’s Struggle and Paul’s Transformation
Zendaya mentioned that Chani has also endured immense hardship over the past 17 years, losing her youthful optimism. She has watched the man she loved become a tyrant, and their fight for liberation has morphed into oppression. Paul, meanwhile, is struggling to hold onto his own values while becoming a powerful emperor, a classic tale of the burdens of leadership.
Villeneuve’s Vision for Dune Messiah
Director Denis Villeneuve acknowledged that Dune Messiah is not as universally beloved as the first book, making it a challenging adaptation. He stated he didn’t want to simply repeat himself, aiming for a fresh approach. Villeneuve described Dune 3 as more of an “action-packed thriller.” He believes focusing on the jihad, which is only mentioned in the book, will effectively show the monstrous side of Paul’s actions and the cost of his choices, rather than just telling the audience about it.
A Fond Farewell to Arrakis
Villeneuve also confirmed that this will be his final Dune film. He expressed deep emotion about saying goodbye to Paul and Chani in the desert, noting that the decade spent making these films has created a strong bond, like a small family. Chalamet echoed this sentiment, stating he practically grew up making these movies.
What’s Next?
The return of Duncan Idaho as a ghola is a major point of intrigue. The film will explore whether he retains his memories and personality or becomes a mere puppet. Villeneuve is moving on to direct the next James Bond film, and while no specific details were shared, Amazon is expected to be involved in promoting Dune 3 at CinemaCon.
