Drews, represented by attorneys Lisa Bloom and Eric Fidali, stated, “He raped me and he choked me. And while he was choking me, I lost consciousness and I thought I died.” She added that her fear of Swalwell’s political power and connections had delayed her coming forward.

Attorneys Bloom and Fidali have directly addressed Swalwell, calling his statement about “mistakes in judgment” insufficient. “Stop it. Own your behavior,” they urged. Their focus, they stated, is on “accountability versus silence” and the “pursuit of justice,” not political ambition.

Special Election Scheduled for 14th District

Following Swalwell’s resignation, California Governor Gavin Newsom has set August 18th as the date for a special election to fill his vacant seat in the 14th Congressional District. This date comes several months after the announcement, leaving the district without representation for a significant period.

Impact on the California Gubernatorial Race

Swalwell’s departure from the governor’s race has created a significant reshuffling among the Democratic candidates. Political analyst Brian Soil noted that Swalwell had a notable percentage of support, which now needs to be redistributed. This could potentially benefit other leading candidates such as billionaire Tom Steyer, Katie Porter, and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan.

“Swallwell did have a fair number of people who were following him in terms of the seven leading Democrats,” Soil explained. “His leaving the race means that the people who are following him… have to be redistributed now. And so because it’s being redistributed, there will be other candidates in the race who may benefit from that.”

Republican Chances in a Democratic-Leaning State

The shake-up also raises questions about the possibility of Republican candidates making it to the November ballot. While California is a strongly Democratic state, Soil believes one Republican might secure a spot. However, he suggested that if Democrats consolidate their support effectively, they could potentially capture both top spots, especially if candidates like Steyer and another frontrunner emerge strongly.

Pressure Mounts on Democratic Candidates

The timing of Swalwell’s exit, just weeks before mail-in ballots for the primary are set to go out, puts considerable pressure on other Democratic candidates. There is a strong push behind the scenes for lower-tiered candidates to withdraw and endorse frontrunners, potentially consolidating the vote. “There’s been a lot of behind the scenes pressure on the lower tiered candidates… to leave,” Soil commented. “Now that they know they’re going to be on the ballot… if you can get out in front and say, ‘Hey, these folks are not running any longer. Please look at the front runners.’”

Endorsements Gain Critical Importance

With key figures like Senator Adam Schiff having previously endorsed Swalwell, the race for endorsements is now intense. “There’s calls going right and left,” Soil observed, describing how candidates are reaching out to those who previously backed Swalwell. He highlighted Congressman Ro Khanna’s early endorsement of Tom Steyer as a strategic advantage, given Swalwell’s downfall.

Will the Scandal Overshadow Key Issues?

The question remains whether Swalwell’s allegations will continue to dominate political discussion or if attention will shift back to core issues facing California. “He will be a factor… to some extent,” Soil stated. “But California, like a lot of other places, they move on pretty quickly. Swalwell is now history.” He emphasized that while Swalwell faces serious civil and potential criminal allegations, the political pressure from the numerous accusers made his survival in politics impossible. Soil also touched on the timing of the story’s release, noting that while its timing is coincidental, it surfaced at a critical juncture for the gubernatorial race.

More Accusers May Emerge

Attorneys for Lana Drews have indicated that at least three other women have already contacted them with allegations of misconduct against Swalwell. This suggests that the fallout from the scandal may continue to unfold, with the possibility of more accusers coming forward.
