Perk’s G-League Reality Check: From Private Jets to Church Gyms
Kendrick Perkins, a former NBA champion and current analyst, recently shared a candid perspective on his G-League experience, revealing a humbling journey that starkly contrasts with the opulence of the NBA. Perkins described his time in the developmental league as one of the most impactful experiences of his basketball career, emphasizing the profound sense of appreciation it fostered for the resources and comforts afforded to NBA players.
A World Away From NBA Luxury
Perkins painted a vivid picture of the disparities between the two leagues. “When you talk about being in the NBA, traveling on private jets, staying in five-star hotels, the money that organizations have put into their owners have put into their organizations far as the doctors, the science, the technology, far as your recovery, personal shifts in the uh practice facility, all that,” he began. This level of support, he explained, is a world apart from the G-League.
The Gritty Reality of the G-League
His G-League journey involved a much harsher reality. “And you go to the G League and you see how you may take a 12-hour bus ride, you may stop at a gas station, your body is aching,” Perkins recounted. The conditions were so rudimentary that he recalled playing in a gym located at a local church. “I played in the G League where we shared I gym was at a local church. I was in the weight room lifting weights with senior citizens. No lie, I was sharing equipment with senior citizens. We didn’t have all the technology,” he stated, highlighting the stark contrast in facilities and resources.
Fostering Appreciation and Humility
This demanding environment, Perkins explained, brought him to a “different level of appreciation for the NBA and what and what what I had when I was in the NBA.” The experience served as a potent reminder of the hard work and sacrifices required to reach the pinnacle of professional basketball, and the often-overlooked struggles of those striving to get there.
Addressing Modern Perceptions
Perkins expressed frustration with what he perceives as a lack of understanding from some current players regarding the G-League grind. “And so when I hear these comments, the first thing that comes to mind is guys are so spoiled. They don’t understand what guys are going through down there in the G League or used to go through to even get to that point,” he asserted. The sentiment stems from the incredible logistical challenges and physical toll players endured.
The Grueling Travel Schedule
He detailed the arduous travel involved: “They don’t understand having to leave at 5 in the morning and catching a a two a two stop plane ride going to a destination that if it was non-stop it’ll take you an hour and a half but you have a 8 to nine hour travel day and you have to land in the main city catch another bus where everybody is cramped up and taking a two hour drive to that to that small city in order to play one G League game and not stay in a fivestar uh hotel.” This grueling schedule, coupled with the lack of luxury accommodations, underscores the dedication required.
A Call for Perspective
Perkins concluded by emphasizing the emotional impact these recollections have on him when current narratives seem to dismiss the G-League struggle. “So, it’s things to nature that when I hear these comments, it make my damn skin crawl,” he admitted. His powerful testimony serves as a stark reminder of the raw realities faced by many aspiring professional basketball players, urging a greater appreciation for the journey and the sacrifices made.
