Congressman Slams ‘Shameful’ Migrant Detention Centers

Rep. Gabe Vasquez has sharply criticized the Department of Homeland Security's use of converted warehouses as migrant detention centers, citing inadequate conditions, insufficient healthcare, and excessive taxpayer spending. He visited a facility in El Paso, Texas, describing it as a "makeshift prison" and is advocating for his "New American Immigration Plan" which focuses on border security technology and economic realities.

Congressman Vasquez Details Troubling Conditions at Migrant Detention Sites

New details are emerging about the conditions inside makeshift migrant detention centers, with U.S. Representative Gabe Vasquez of New Mexico leading the charge in criticizing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). These facilities, converted from former retail warehouses, are facing significant legal challenges over basic necessities like water and sewage systems. The effort to quickly expand detention capacity appears aimed at fulfilling a campaign pledge for mass deportations, leading to rushed property purchases rather than new construction.

Concerns Mount Over Warehouse Detention Model

Despite reports that DHS might pause further warehouse acquisitions to review existing sites, the agency’s new Secretary, Mark Wayne Mullen, has not signaled an end to this approach. Congressman Vasquez recently visited one such facility, Camp East, located in El Paso, Texas, near the U.S.-Mexico border. He described the site as a “makeshift prison” in the harsh Chihuahuan Desert, where summer temperatures can soar to 113 degrees Fahrenheit.

Inadequate Care and Human Rights Issues Highlighted

At Camp East, which was holding around 800 individuals with a capacity for 5,000, Vasquez observed significant problems. A contractor with no prior experience in building such facilities was reportedly in charge.

A recent Inspector General report, released just before his visit, cited inadequate healthcare and documented three deaths at the center since it opened. Vasquez called the living conditions “substandard” and contrary to American values.

“Places where it reaches up to 113 degrees during the summer. I saw a contractor there that had no experience building such a facility…

I saw a report by the IG that was just released days before I visited, citing inadequate health care. Three deaths that had happened at that detention center since the time it’s been open.”

Taxpayer Money and Lack of Oversight Criticized

Vasquez expressed outrage over the amount of taxpayer money being spent on these facilities. He stated that the government is not buying these properties at market rates, instead spending vast sums across the country.

This spending, totaling billions from a $75 billion allocation to ICE through a reconciliation bill, lacks sufficient vetting of properties and contractors. Vasquez emphasized that the majority of detainees are Latinos and Hispanics, questioning the due diligence in the process.

Call for Accountability and New Approaches

The Congressman has been actively seeking answers from DHS, sending letters with numerous questions about standards of care, but has received responses to only one. He believes the $75 billion given to ICE was intentionally structured to bypass congressional oversight. Vasquez hopes Secretary Mullen will bring a different approach to ICE’s enforcement activities, but remains skeptical, suggesting cabinet members ultimately answer to the President, not the public or the Constitution.

Vasquez Proposes ‘New American Immigration Plan’

Beyond criticism, Vasquez is also proposing solutions with his “New American Immigration Plan.” Representing a border district that relies heavily on international trade and migrant labor, he stresses the need for enhanced border security. His plan includes increased funding for technology at ports of entry, arguing that investing in existing technology is more effective than building more warehouses.

Economic Realities of Immigration

Vasquez also highlighted the economic necessity of immigrant labor. He cited examples in the caregiving and agricultural sectors, where employers state their businesses would fail without immigrant workers.

He believes Democrats need to be more proactive in legislating immigration policy. Vasquez sees an opportunity for bipartisan cooperation, noting that most Americans disapprove of the current handling of immigration enforcement.

Looking Ahead: Border Security and Economic Integration

Congressman Vasquez plans to continue pushing for his proposed immigration reforms, focusing on practical solutions that address both border security and economic needs. The effectiveness of these proposals in a divided Congress remains to be seen, but Vasquez is committed to finding common ground. His next steps involve further engagement with DHS and advocating for legislative changes that prioritize effective border management and support for industries reliant on immigrant labor.
