Clintons’ Epstein Testimony Goes Private Amid GOP Fears
Bill and Hillary Clinton are providing sworn testimony to Congress regarding their past ties to Jeffrey Epstein. The depositions, held privately, are seen by some as a Republican strategy to extract damaging information without public scrutiny, while also highlighting a perceived lack of political accountability in the US compared to other nations.
Clintons Face Congressional Scrutiny Over Epstein Ties
Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are set to undergo two days of sworn testimony before Congress regarding their past associations with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Hillary Clinton’s deposition is scheduled for today, followed by Bill Clinton’s tomorrow. The Clintons initially resisted testifying but ultimately yielded to congressional pressure. Republicans are expected to focus on controversial photographs, including one depicting Bill Clinton in a hot tub with an unidentified individual and another showing him with an arm around a woman, which gained significant attention following the release of Epstein’s files last December.
Behind Closed Doors: Why the Testimony is Private
The decision to hold the depositions in private has sparked debate, with a former Clinton adviser suggesting it’s a strategic move by Republicans to avoid potential embarrassment. “They know that the Clintons are both extremely bright, extremely experienced at testimony, and I think the Republicans are afraid of being embarrassed, which is why they’re doing this in private to see whether they can get any little tidbits that they can use against the Clintons,” stated Hillary Rosen, a Democratic strategist and former ally to the Clintons.
Congressional depositions, explained Rosen, are part of Congress’s oversight and investigative authority, allowing committees to compel testimony via subpoena. The decision on whether such testimony is public or private rests with the committee. “The plan is for this um uh congressman, the Republican chair of the committee. His goal obviously is to create some sort of report uh about their investigation into the Epstein files that attacks Democrats. That’s their goal and that’s been their focus of the investigation,” she added.
A Bipartisan Battle Over Epstein Files
The Epstein case has become a focal point for partisan maneuvering in Washington. While Republicans are seeking to leverage the depositions for political gain against Democrats, the transcript indicates that Democrats also sought to use the Epstein files to find material that could be used against Donald Trump. “There’s no question that both sides of the aisle here in America are trying to use the Epstein files as a way to kind of tarnish the other side,” Rosen observed. She noted that while the Epstein case has significant political ramifications, many individuals involved were primarily business or community leaders, with the political dimension arising largely from the contentious release of the files.
Contrasting Approaches: US vs. UK on Accountability
The article draws a stark contrast between the political fallout from the Epstein scandal in the United States and the United Kingdom. In Britain, the issue has led to significant political repercussions, including the arrest of a member of the royal family, the resignation and subsequent arrest of an ambassador, and pressure on the prime minister, resulting in the resignations of his chief of staff and director of communications. In the US, however, beyond these depositions, there has been a perceived lack of political accountability.
“I think that that’s one of the, you know, the worst um problems that that we have right now in American politics, which is that there is no focus on the women, on the crimes, on actual accountability,” Rosen lamented. She suggested that Britain, in this instance, serves as a model for identifying and pursuing real wrongdoing and crime, a level of intention she feels is missing in the US approach. While some business leaders have faced consequences, such as resignations from positions or board memberships, no significant political figures have been held accountable across different administrations.
Hillary Clinton in the Spotlight: Personal and Political Crossfire
The testimony places Hillary Clinton in a particularly difficult position, with Rosen suggesting that this is yet another instance of her reputation being tarnished by association with her husband’s past. “This is just in many instances one more example of Hillary’s reputation being tarnished by her husband. There’s no suggestion and no evidence that she ever even met Jeffrey Epstein,” Rosen stated. She pointed out that Hillary Clinton was not on the early trips Bill Clinton took with Epstein, even though those trips predated Epstein’s convictions.
Despite her apparent lack of direct involvement, Hillary Clinton is being drawn into the controversy due to her political profile. “And yet, because she is such a target, what we call red meat here for the Republicans, they’re dragging her into this and sort of push forcing her to kind of once again have that Clinton alliance, that unity of Hillary Clinton standing by her man and and defending him,” Rosen explained. She speculated that while Bill Clinton’s involvement with Epstein is a possibility, there is no evidence of his involvement with underage victims. However, she acknowledged “unsavory behavior from from all of the men associated there with Jeffrey Epstein.”
Anticipating the Questions and Potential Outcomes
Regarding the specific questions Hillary Clinton might face, Rosen anticipates inquiries about her potential limited encounters with Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s associate. “Well, she did say that she may have met Gala Galain Maxwell a couple of times. Um, so I think they will ask about that.” She also expects questions about Hillary Clinton’s knowledge of her husband’s interactions with Epstein, to which she would likely respond with limited information. Rosen suggested that Republicans might try to leverage Hillary Clinton’s own advocacy work on issues like child trafficking and women’s protection to elicit statements that could be used against other Democrats.
Despite the political machinations, Rosen concluded that the truth about many individuals connected to Epstein may remain elusive due to a perceived “elite cabal” protecting each other. While Hillary Clinton is known for identifying political enemies, Rosen believes she is likely not pleased with the situation. “You can bet she is not a happy camper today,” Rosen remarked.
Looking Ahead: The Lingering Questions
As the depositions unfold, the focus remains on whether this congressional scrutiny will yield any substantive revelations or simply serve as a political spectacle. The broader question of accountability, particularly in the political sphere, continues to loom large, with observers keen to see if the US will adopt a more robust approach to addressing such complex and damaging scandals, drawing lessons from international comparisons.
