EU Funds Lavish Projects in ‘Orbán Land’ Amid Corruption Probe

Hungary’s former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s home village has become a symbol of alleged corruption, with lavish projects like a football stadium and an artificial lake funded by the European Union. This “Orbán Land,” as it’s been called, is located near Orbán’s childhood home, about 25 miles outside Budapest. The area features a football stadium with 3,800 seats, double the village’s population, alongside a large football academy.

An empty narrow-gauge railway, also EU-funded, runs a few miles through the village, connecting nowhere to nowhere. An artificial lake with an island, another EU-funded project, sits at one end of the village.

Manor House and Secretive Deals

Perhaps the most striking development is a former Habsburg-era manor house. Orbán’s 85-year-old father purchased this property and is transforming it into a grand mansion. The purchase and subsequent leaseback involved complex financial arrangements with Hungary’s richest man, who started as a gasfitter and attended school with Viktor Orbán.

This wealthy associate, with a $5 billion fortune, is reportedly involved in the manor house’s renovation. Both Orbán and his father deny any wrongdoing, despite the financial maneuvers surrounding the property.

Exotic Attractions Emerge

Beyond the village itself, the surrounding area boasts surprising attractions. A safari park, located not far from the village, houses exotic animals like zebras and antelopes. This park is owned by an associate of Orbán’s.

A golf club is part of the developing infrastructure. These additions, alongside the stadium and lake, paint a picture of significant development in a rural area, raising questions about the source and purpose of such extensive projects.

Whistleblowers Expose Graft

The alleged corruption within Orbán’s regime was not entirely hidden. Numerous whistleblowers and opposition figures, like Peter Magyar, brought attention to these issues. Magyar’s campaign connected the alleged graft to the poor living conditions of ordinary Hungarians, leading to a surprising electoral victory.

One key whistleblower, a former veterinarian turned MP with a pilot’s license, actively campaigned against Orbán. He even used his flying skills to document the manor house and other developments from the air.

Shifting Political Mood

The recent election results signal a significant change in Hungary’s political climate. Many citizens expressed relief at Orbán’s departure, with one elderly woman stating, “Thank God Orbán has gone. I prayed for this.” The incoming opposition leader, Peter Magyar, has promised a systemic change, setting high expectations for his administration.

While this ambitious approach carries risks, it has generated a strong sense of hope for a “new dawn” in Hungary. The public is eager to see the country become a functioning, non-corrupt member of the European Union once again.

Looking Ahead

As Hungary transitions to a new government, the focus will be on whether Peter Magyar can deliver on his promises of reform and transparency. The coming months will be crucial in determining if the country can move past the era of alleged corruption and rebuild public trust. The success of this new administration in addressing economic disparities and rooting out corruption will be closely watched by both its citizens and international partners.
