Harmon Surpasses Legends, Joins Elite Assist Club
Rori Harmon isn’t just playing basketball; she’s rewriting the record books. She recently etched her name into Texas history, holding the state record for most assists and steals.
Now, Harmon has officially cracked the top 10 in career assists for women’s college basketball. This puts her in the same conversation as legendary players like Suzie McConnell, Caitlin Clark, and Sabrina Ionescu.
When asked about being listed among such esteemed names, Harmon shared her feelings. “That’s super cool. I’m to be listed in those names.
I feel really honored,” she said. She added, “I want to live up to that legacy that these names have already paved the way for me.” Harmon is committed to continuing her strong play, stating, “I’m going to continue playing the way I’ve been playing.”
A Point Guard’s Philosophy
This impressive milestone speaks volumes about Harmon’s approach to the game. She sees her role as elevating those around her.
“I think I just like making everyone else around me better,” Harmon explained. As a point guard, she knows when to score, but her true passion lies elsewhere.
“I also love making that extra pass. I love creating plays. I love playing hard on defense,” she continued.
Harmon believes this all-around effort is what energizes her team. “I think that’s what gets our team going, and I just need a star in my role when we do that,” she stated.
A Bond Forged in Recruitment and Championship Dreams
Harmon’s journey at Texas is deeply connected to her relationship with Coach Vic Schaefer. The two shared an emotional moment after her final home game, a scene that was widely celebrated. Schaefer recruited Harmon to Texas in 2021, making her his very first recruit for the program.
Their bond has grown significantly over the past five years. Harmon recalled the recruiting process, noting Schaefer’s honesty. “He told me that I can start here.
We can start together. We can lay this foundation together, pull in great players like which we’ve had,” Harmon shared.
Schaefer’s vision for Harmon was clear: to build a legacy at the University of Texas. “He said I would be able to build a legacy here at the University of Texas,” Harmon said.
For a young player, this was a powerful promise. “When you’re a young player like that, hearing that, that’s all you want to do, like you want to be a legend somewhere,” she added.
The Work Continues
Despite the accolades and the strong foundation built, Harmon feels the mission is far from over. Their relationship with Coach Schaefer has been a driving force throughout her college career. “We built our relationship over the course of the five years,” Harmon said.
“But the job’s not finished. So, we’re both really excited and we’re both really locked in,” she concluded, emphasizing their shared determination to achieve further success together. The focus remains on finishing strong and making the most of their time on the court.
Harmon’s record-breaking performance and her deep connection with her coach highlight a season defined by both individual achievement and team dedication. As the team looks ahead, their shared ambition promises more exciting moments on the court.
