The announcement, made live on NBA Tip-Off, capped off a highly anticipated recruitment process for the talented young player.
A Family Affair on National Television
The reveal was a surprise to many, including some of the NBA Tip-Off crew. Ernie Johnson Jr. initially feigned ignorance, playing along as Malloy himself appeared on screen, much to the astonishment of Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal. “What are you talking about? That’s him,” Kenny exclaimed, a mix of surprise and pride evident in his voice. Johnson then took the lead, treating Malloy with the same respect afforded to other high-profile recruits who have appeared on the show.
The Recruitment Journey: Prayer, Time, and Family
Malloy spoke candidly about his decision-making process. “I’ve done a lot of praying and I’ve taken a lot of time in my recruitment,” he shared. “I think the best thing for me to do is join the Carolina family.” He elaborated on what drew him to Chapel Hill, highlighting the deep-rooted sense of family within the program. “Just how family oriented it is. Like all the coaches there, they all went to UNCC, they all played there. Um, they all have a great connection with the school. They take it very seriously.”
He also extended his gratitude to key figures in his journey: “I also just want to thank God Davis and all the coaches at UNCC. My family, my friends, and my teammates for the guidance and the help they’ve given me throughout the years.” A special mention was also made to his coaches as his high school team strives for a state championship in the coming week.
Tar Heels Over Tigers and Tigers?
When pressed about the closeness of other programs in his recruitment, particularly LSU and Auburn, Malloy kept it concise but definitive. “We’ll just say was Tarill through it through, baby. Let’s go,” he declared, emphasizing that North Carolina was the clear choice. He mentioned conversations with Cal and other schools, but the visit to UNC solidified his decision. “Obviously it was just after the visit I just felt like a family and um it was great.”
A Father’s Pride and a Studio’s Blessing
Kenny Smith, visibly emotional, expressed his immense pride in his son’s achievement. “Your dad and I have been working together for a long, long time. Um, even before you were born. Um, and so to have this day happen. Um, do you know how proud it is to that you’ve that you’ve made this guy sitting to my left?” Malloy reciprocated the sentiment, acknowledging his father’s unwavering support: “He’s helped me a lot. I mean, I can’t thank him enough of how much he’s done for me. Just training day in and day out and always being there for me. I mean, yesterday he was at my game, so for him to be there tonight, it just shows how much he cares about me.”
The entire NBA Tip-Off studio crew joined in the congratulations, embracing Malloy as part of their extended family. “They helped raise you, six you little baby. When I when I had to take you to work, they was the one holding holding you down. So, the whole crew is here, the whole studio, man. Congratulations. Go Heels.” Even Shaquille O’Neal chimed in with a playful offer of NIL money, wishing Malloy good luck.
