Walz Criticizes Trump’s Foreign Policy, Launches Rural Outreach Effort

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz sharply criticized former President Donald Trump’s foreign policy decisions, calling them “feeble-minded” and “trigger-happy.” Speaking at a global progressive leaders’ summit in Spain, Walz argued that Trump plunged the U.S. into unnecessary conflicts with no clear goals. He addressed an international audience including leaders from Brazil and South Africa, emphasizing the need for the United States to remain a strong global partner.

Walz stated that the antidote to global instability is not just talk, but delivering policies that improve people’s lives. He highlighted investments in public education, efforts to reduce childhood poverty, and disease eradication as examples of impactful governance. The Governor noted a shared understanding among global leaders that the old world order is changing and requires collective creation of a new one.

Focusing on Rural Communities

Governor Walz is launching a new political action committee, the “Small Town PAC,” aimed at recruiting and supporting Democratic candidates in rural areas across the nation. He believes Trump’s policies have disproportionately harmed these communities, which can least afford such impacts. Walz grew up in a small town and wants to ensure these areas are seen as vital to America’s story, not just its big cities.

He acknowledged that many in rural America feel left out of national conversations and that this feeling predates Trump’s rise. Walz stressed that progressives must do a better job connecting their policies to tangible improvements in daily life. He used his own K-12 school experience, with 24 classmates in one building, to contrast with current Republican proposals like school vouchers.

Challenging Republican Narratives

Walz argued that school voucher programs, often promoted by Republicans, would not create new private schools in rural areas. Instead, he suggested they would shift funds away from struggling public schools. Similarly, he pointed to potential Medicaid cuts that would directly impact rural hospitals, weakening the community foundations that foster local pride.

He addressed the common sentiment in rural areas: “What difference does it make who we elect?” Walz believes Democrats need to make a stronger case for their policies, such as strong public schools and accessible healthcare. He also criticized Trump’s agriculture policies, which he claims put century-old family farms at risk, while venture capital firms can acquire land cheaply.

Building Political Infrastructure

The Governor emphasized that good politics should follow good policy. His own journey from a 40-year-old teacher with no political experience to Governor highlights the need for better infrastructure to support potential candidates. He cited the work of the late Senator Paul Wellstone and Wellstone Action in Minnesota, which trained him in essential organizing skills like door-knocking.

Walz stated that Democrats often rely on “catching lightning in a bottle” rather than building the necessary organization. His Small Town PAC aims to provide this infrastructure, enabling authentic conversations about how progressive policies can make a real difference. He believes the division often seen on political maps obscures the shared identity of being one country.

Winning for Policy, Not Power

Drawing inspiration from Prime Minister Sanchez’s remarks in Spain, Walz believes progressives must not only win elections but also hold power effectively. He stated that winning should be about enacting policies that improve lives, not just holding office for its own sake. He sees a “golden opportunity” to improve the country tangibly, especially by addressing the needs of rural communities.

Walz expressed his determination to fight for public schools and ensure policies benefit rural hospitals. He believes that by understanding and addressing the “angst” people are feeling, Democrats can earn their votes. He concluded that if they fail to offer real solutions, they don’t deserve to be elected.

“I will fight with everything I have to protect those public schools.”

Looking Ahead

The Small Town PAC has already raised approximately $50,000, with 95% of donations being small, $5 contributions, signaling broad grassroots support. Governor Walz sees this as a crucial step in building the necessary infrastructure to connect with and support communities often overlooked by national political efforts. The PAC’s success will be measured by its ability to translate these funds into organized action and elect candidates who champion policies benefiting everyday Americans, particularly in rural areas.
