NY Food Bank Opens Doors to Help Thousands Facing Hunger
A new 50,000-square-foot food distribution warehouse in Montgomery, NY, is set to dramatically increase aid for hungry families in the Hudson Valley. The facility, supported by dedicated volunteers, will distribute 20 million pounds of food annually, with a new focus on fresh produce. Community members can contribute through the "Feeding Our Families" food drive this Saturday at Stop & Shop.
Hudson Valley Food Bank Boosts Aid for Hungry Families
A new, state-of-the-art food distribution center has opened in Montgomery, New York, aiming to combat rising food insecurity in the Hudson Valley region. This 50,000-square-foot facility, operated by the Regional Food Bank, is designed to significantly increase the amount of food available to those in need. It is a crucial resource for an area where 11% of families worry about their next meal.
The modern warehouse allows the Regional Food Bank to distribute an impressive 20 million pounds of food annually. This food reaches people through a network of 400 local programs.
These programs include food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and residential care facilities for individuals with developmental disabilities. The center also focuses on providing important nutritional education to the community.
Volunteers Powering the Mission
The success of the food bank relies heavily on a dedicated team of volunteers. These volunteers work tirelessly, seven days a week, across day and evening shifts.
They sort, pack, and prepare food for distribution. Their efforts are essential for the food bank to meet the growing demand.
One volunteer described the food they are packing as a “gift from God,” especially with current food prices. They explained how difficult it is for low-income families to afford groceries.
For someone earning $400 a week, the rising cost of food can be overwhelming by the end of the month. The food bank’s services are a true lifesaver for many.
Fresh Food Focus Addresses Nutritional Gaps
A key feature of the new facility is its massive refrigerator and freezer capacity, five times larger than the old location. This expanded capacity allows for a greater focus on fresh produce.
Currently, 40% of the food distributed consists of fresh fruits and vegetables. This marks a significant improvement in the quality and healthfulness of the food provided.
The emphasis on fresh produce is seen as vital for community health. One employee, Nicole Hill, shared her personal connection to this mission.
She recalled receiving less nutritious options when she used food pantries as a child, like canned meats and dried beans. She finds fulfillment in her work, knowing they are now offering healthier choices and healing the community through good nutrition.
People to People: A Local Partner
People to People, Rockland County’s main hunger-relief organization, is a direct beneficiary of the Regional Food Bank’s work. They provide food assistance to approximately 6,000 low-income residents each month. Without the support of the Regional Food Bank, this essential service would not be possible.
The organization highlighted the indispensable role of the food bank and its volunteers. Their partnership ensures that vulnerable populations receive consistent and nutritious food support. This collaboration is a strong example of how larger organizations can empower local efforts to fight hunger.
How You Can Help: Feeding Our Families Food Drive
The community can directly support these efforts through the upcoming “Feeding Our Families” food drive. This event is sponsored by NBC 4 New York and Telemundo 47. It will take place this Saturday at local Stop & Shop stores.
Every donation made during the food drive will go directly to restocking food banks, including the one in Orange County. This is a direct way for individuals to make a tangible difference in the lives of their neighbors facing food insecurity.
