Two Teens Dead After Planned Fight Erupts in Gunfire

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – A planned fight at a public park turned deadly Monday morning, leaving two teenagers dead and several others injured. The incident occurred around 9:52 a.m. On April 20, 2026, at Lineback Park when a confrontation escalated into gunfire, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.

Tragedy Unfolds at Lineback Park

Police officers responded to reports of a fight in progress at the park. While en route, they received additional information that shots had been fired and multiple people had been struck. Upon arrival, officers found individuals fleeing the scene.

In the parking lot, officers discovered a 17-year-old male, later identified as Aru Romero Medina, who had suffered a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Further inside the park, a second victim, 16-year-old Daniel Jimenez Million, was found with a gunshot wound and also pronounced deceased at the scene.

Multiple Victims, Including Juveniles, Injured

In addition to the fatalities, several other individuals sustained gunshot wounds ranging from critical to minor. These victims, located in the parking lot of a nearby address, included a 14-year-old female, a 15-year-old female, a 17-year-old female, an 18-year-old male, and a 19-year-old female. In accordance with North Carolina law, the names of the juvenile victims will not be released.

The name of the adult victim is also being withheld as investigators work to determine everyone’s role in the incident. Police confirmed that a total of seven individuals were struck by gunfire. Detectives are actively investigating to understand each person’s involvement, noting that some of the injured may have also participated in the shooting.

Officials Address Community Concerns

Winston-Salem Police Chief P. Expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and acknowledged the fear and frustration within the community.

“Firearms are the number one killer of kids 1 to 17 in our nation,” he stated, also noting this incident marked the 98th mass shooting in the country this year. He urged parents to continue conversations with their children about staying away from fights, highlighting how the presence of weapons and the sharing of videos has changed the nature of youth confrontations.

“We got to tell them to stay away from fights. I feel like I just had the same conversation about our cell phones and fights and how just having those phones out, how that changes the behavior of our youth.

And I’m saying it again, stay away from the fights. It’s not the same as it used to be.”

The Chief emphasized the importance of parental engagement and community involvement, stating that arrests alone are not the solution to public safety issues. “It’s called public safety because we all play a role,” he said, calling for collective action.

Community Leaders Call for Action

District Attorney Jim O’Neal echoed the Chief’s sentiments, sharing his own commitment to speaking with young men about the dangers of violence. “You don’t know who’s going to pull out a gun and start shooting. And that’s a sad reality,” he remarked.

He highlighted that despite recent decreases in overall violent crime in Winston-Salem, the risk remains for those involved in violent lifestyles. O’Neal stressed that law enforcement will prosecute those who harm others, but urged community members to help prevent such tragedies. “I can’t help but believe that somebody out there would have known about this fight taking place this morning and didn’t pick up a phone and anonymously call and this could have been averted,” he stated.

Investigation Ongoing, Tips Sought

The investigation revealed that the incident stemmed from a pre-planned fight among juveniles at the park, not on school grounds. Authorities are actively seeking information from the public. Tips can be submitted anonymously through Crimestoppers or via text message to the Winston-Salem Police Department.

No one has been taken into custody yet, and investigators are still determining the number of weapons used. Police stated that while the shooting appeared confined to the park, the trajectory of bullets can be unpredictable. Officials reassured the community that Winston-Salem remains a safe city, but stressed that safety is a shared responsibility requiring active participation from everyone.

Looking Ahead

The Winston-Salem Police Department plans to release a statement with the confirmed spellings of victims’ names and their ages. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are appealing to the community for assistance in identifying those involved and preventing future violence.
