Dr. Doom’s Shocking Plan Revealed in Doomsday Trailer!
The first trailer for Marvel’s upcoming Avengers Doomsday has just dropped, and it’s already sending shockwaves through the fan community. Early descriptions from those lucky enough to see it at Cineacon are giving us a glimpse into the epic scale of this film. More details are emerging, helping fans understand Dr. Doom’s master plan in Doomsday.
Much of the trailer’s action takes place at the iconic X-Mansion, a familiar setting for many fans. The trailer opens with a shot of the estate’s metal sign, followed by Charles Xavier looking out at a red sky.
This fiery atmosphere is caused by an “incursion,” a cosmic event that ignites the very air around them. This explains the reddish tint seen in various teasers.
Inside the X-Mansion, Charles and Magneto appear to be accepting their fate as the world faces this crisis. Downstairs, explosive fights break out.
Gambit clashes with Shani, while Yelena Belova faces off against Mystique, who expertly shapeshifts to mimic Yelena. Reed Richards and Sam Wilson are also present in the mansion, alongside a surprising cameo from Herbie, the robot sidekick.
Thor is also featured prominently, seen in the mansion’s gardens engaging in a confrontation with the formidable Dr. Doom. Dr. Doom’s face remains hidden throughout the trailer.
While some early reports suggested his mask was removed, we can confirm he is wearing it. The sharp, angled metallic nose piece and visible ridges are key design elements of his mask in this film.
Robert Downey Jr. voices Dr. Doom, delivering a chilling line: “Something’s coming, something we may not be able to deter. Before this day is done, we shall be faced with an unthinkable decision.” This quote hints at the immense stakes and difficult choices the heroes will face.
Notably absent from the trailer were Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler and Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, two prominent X-Men characters confirmed to be in the movie. Bob Reynolds, also known as Sentry, also did not appear in the trailer footage shown.
Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, spoke about the significance of bringing the Avengers and X-Men together. He mentioned that some familiar sets from past X-Men films would be used, which he found quite emotional to revisit after 26 years. This suggests a deep connection to the franchise’s history.
The X-Mansion in Doomsday features more stained glass than its Fox-era counterparts, adding a distinct visual flair. One memorable shot shows Gambit leaping from a balcony with a stained-glass ceiling above. Feige’s comment about recognizing sets, while not a spoiler, strongly hints at the appearance of Cerebro.
Cerebro, the mutant-finding machine, is arguably the most iconic interior set from the original X-Men films. Given that the mansion has a lower level, it’s highly likely that Cerebro is hidden within its depths. The characters might need Cerebro to locate the missing mutant, Franklin Richards.
Wesley Holloway has been cast as the new Franklin Richards, a fact revealed in a Disney press release. Franklin’s presence was already hinted at, as he was seen on a production tote bag. Holloway is a different actor than the one who played the younger Franklin in the Fantastic Four post-credits scene, suggesting either a recast or that time has passed.
Katherine Newton is confirmed to play Cassie Lang, Scott Lang’s daughter. She was seen kissing Scott on the forehead in the trailer, sporting newly dyed hair. Newton shared her involvement on social media.
Feige confirmed that the plot of Doomsday is inspired by a famous comic run where universes collide. This concept, known as “incursions,” allows different timelines and characters from various franchises to meet within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The film draws heavily from Jonathan Hickman’s “Time Runs Out” storyline, which led into the 2015 “Secret Wars” event. This storyline features Reed Richards explaining incursions, where two universes collide. However, Doomsday expands on this by featuring three distinct universes colliding: Earth-616 (the main MCU), the X-Men universe, and the Fantastic Four universe.
Joe Russo described Dr. Doom as a genius scientist, technologist, and magician, always thinking three steps ahead. This description echoes Tony Stark’s famous line: “Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.” Doom’s intellect and magical abilities are key to his power, allowing him to counter even Thor’s Stormbreaker.
Dr. Doom’s plan appears to be to exploit these natural incursions. He aims to merge the three strongest universes into one new world called Battleworld.
This new world would be populated by heroes deemed most fit to survive and lead. Doom may see the children he’s gathered, like Franklin Richards and T’Challa Jr., as the first generation of this new world.
Doom’s dialogue suggests he believes he is acting heroically, even if it means letting parts of the original worlds perish. He might be trying to comfort those he recruits, convincing them to accept the “unthinkable decision” of merging worlds. This contrasts sharply with Thanos’s more overtly villainous pronouncements.
Anthony Russo elaborated on Doom’s character, noting his immense power but also hidden vulnerabilities. This complexity suggests Doom might be making an extreme sacrifice as part of his plan.
Feige stated that Doomsday and the upcoming Secret Wars films are ambitious projects that relate differently than Infinity War and Endgame. While one leads into the other, the connection is not the same. Secret Wars is expected to be even larger in scope.
Unlike Infinity War and Endgame, where heroes reversed Thanos’s victory, Secret Wars might see a permanent change to the universe. The surviving heroes may have to adapt to this new reality, with new heroes like mutants and Miles Morales leading the charge in this altered world.
Questions remain about Steve Rogers’s return, Thor’s current situation, and the specific pairings of Avengers seen in the trailer. Fans are eagerly awaiting the official trailer release to get more answers and a clearer picture of the unfolding story.
