Robots Rise: US Firm Challenges China in Defense Tech Race
A U.S. company, Foundation, is rapidly developing advanced humanoid robots for defense and heavy industry, aiming to compete with China's progress. With backing from Eric Trump, the company plans mass production of powerful robots capable of complex tasks and even city construction.
Robots Rise: US Firm Challenges China in Defense Tech Race
The United States is stepping up its game in the development of advanced humanoid robots for national security. A company called Foundation is working on these powerful machines, aiming to give U.S. troops an edge. They have even landed a contract with the Pentagon to help soldiers safely enter dangerous energy sites.
This push comes as China is also making significant strides in military robotics. “China is developing quite advanced capabilities on both land and air based autonomies,” stated Eric Trump, Chief Strategy Advisor at Foundation. While the U.S. is strong in air-based autonomous systems, Foundation claims to be the only startup in the U.S. and the Western world focused on humanoid robots for defense.
Foundation’s Ambitious Goals
Foundation’s vision extends beyond just military applications. “Our goal is to be able to provide those tools and those kind of advanced technologies not only to the U.S. military but also almost any heavy industry application,” explained the company’s founder and CEO. This includes uses in construction, building housing, and disaster relief.
The company is already moving beyond its first-generation robot, the Phantom Mach-1. They are now focused on the Phantom Mach-2, a production robot designed for mass manufacturing. This second-generation model can carry 80 kilograms, is waterproof, and dustproof, unlike its predecessor.
Foundation plans to unveil a new robot in the coming months that they believe will be the strongest humanoid robot globally, surpassing even those developed in China. “I think it’s going to be the strongest humanoid robot that exists anywhere in the world including China,” the founder stated.
Eric Trump Joins the Fight
Eric Trump has joined Foundation as Chief Strategy Advisor, driven by a desire to ensure American leadership in robotics. “We have to win this race,” he emphasized. He compares this effort to the race for digital revolution, stating, “We have to win robotics in the United States of America.”
Trump highlighted the rapid progress in robotics, referencing a robot in Beijing that ran a marathon faster than humans. “These are in the very early days. We better be winning this race in the United States of America,” he urged.
He sees vast potential for AI-powered robots across various sectors. “When you interact with these robots, they high five you, follow their commands.
You bring in AI autonomy, it’s going to change industry, it’s going to change military operations, it’s going to change hospitality. The uses are unlimited,” Trump said.
Robots for Earth and Beyond
Foundation’s long-term vision is ambitious, aiming to build life-sustaining technology on Earth and in space. Their ultimate goal includes establishing new cities on the Moon and Mars.
The company’s name is inspired by the astronaut series, “Foundation.” The founder is particularly excited about giving AI a physical body for real-world tasks. Unlike others focusing on everyday chores, Foundation targets heavy-duty robots for dangerous jobs.
“I’m very convinced with the technology advancements that I’ve seen firsthand at Foundation, I think over the course of the next five to ten years, these robots would be capable of actually constructing cities bigger than New York for a fraction of the price,” the founder explained.
Scaling Up Production and Impact
Foundation’s immediate plan is to move from Phantom 1 to Phantom 2 and begin mass production later this year. They intend to deploy these robots in defense and heavy industries like manufacturing and logistics.
Once profitable, the company plans to reinvest profits into building large infrastructure projects, such as cities and housing solutions. “Our biggest goal is we want to graduate from Phantom 1 to Phantom 2. We want to start doing mass volume production, later this year,” the founder stated.
Broader Applications and Ethical Guardrails
Eric Trump sees widespread use for these robots in hospitality, healthcare, and senior care. He envisions robots handling heavy lifting, autonomous lawn mowing, and fertilizer spraying in agriculture.
He stressed the urgency due to other nations advancing rapidly. “Other countries are sprinting towards this technology and that’s why I’m proud of this mission, that’s why I’m proud of Foundation and everything they’ve accomplished,” Trump said. He marveled at the robots’ ability to lift 200 pounds, calling their capabilities incredible.
The discussion also touched upon the ethical considerations of autonomous weapons. Citing a recent debate where Anthropic pushed back against using autonomous weaponry without a kill switch, the founder offered his perspective.
“I think, yeah, for sure there needs to be guardrails in place,” he acknowledged. However, he argued that for certain critical situations, like intercepting missiles with systems similar to Israel’s Iron Dome, immediate response is necessary. “You cannot wait for a human to approve all of the reaction times because the likelihood if you do not act, there’s 100% casualty, it’s quite high,” he explained.
He believes the Pentagon’s approach is reasonable, allowing for rapid deployment when needed. “It would be better to align the framework and I think the Pentagon framework is quite good,” the founder stated.
Defending American Progress
Drawing from his family’s history of experiencing historical exploitation, Trump emphasized the need for strong defense. “My family comes from India and we have had a history of being pillaged for generations,” he shared.
He argued against an overly idealistic view of the future, stating, “You can’t build a building and not defend it.” He believes the U.S. must be smart enough to protect its creations, especially with adversaries like China actively developing advanced military technology.
The article highlights Foundation’s progress and ambitious plans, setting the stage for a potential shift in the global defense and heavy industry robotics landscape as they aim to compete with China’s advancements.
