Epstein’s New Mexico Ranch Becomes Focus of New Probe
A new state investigation has been launched into Jeffrey Epstein's Zorro Ranch in New Mexico after federal authorities did not search the property following his 2019 arrest. Former Attorney General Hector Balderas expressed shock at the lack of federal action, and lawmakers have formed a commission to uncover more details. The property was recently sold and is slated to become a Christian retreat, though victims' families question the possibility of healing such a place.
New State Investigation Launched into Epstein’s Zorro Ranch
Federal investigators did not search Jeffrey Epstein’s vast Zorro Ranch in New Mexico after his 2019 arrest, a decision that has drawn sharp criticism and prompted a new state-level investigation. The ranch, located in the remote New Mexico desert, was Epstein’s personal estate where he allegedly committed numerous abuses. The lack of a federal search at the time has raised serious questions about the thoroughness of the initial investigation into his crimes.
Hector Balderas, New Mexico’s former Attorney General, expressed his shock that federal authorities did not examine the property. Balderas had initiated his own investigation into the ranch but was asked by federal officials to halt his efforts.
He believed they would share their findings, as had happened in other cases. This did not occur, leaving state officials without crucial evidence.
Lawmakers Push for Answers
New Mexico lawmakers established a bipartisan commission this spring to look into Zorro Ranch. This action followed the release of documents from the Justice Department related to Epstein’s case. The commission aims to uncover what happened on the property and why more was not done by federal authorities to investigate it at the time of Epstein’s arrest.
“At this point we don’t have the full story,” said one lawmaker involved with the commission. “Most of the information was provided to the federal government and has not been provided back.” This lack of information sharing has fueled the ongoing demand for transparency and a complete accounting of Epstein’s activities at the ranch.
Federal Government Offers Cooperation
The Department of Justice (DOJ) declined to comment on specific materials related to the Zorro Ranch investigation. However, they stated they welcome New Mexico’s decision to conduct additional investigations. The DOJ also affirmed their readiness to work closely with state officials if their probes uncover potential federal crimes.
This offers a path forward for collaboration, potentially bridging the gap left by the initial lack of federal action at the ranch. The DOJ’s willingness to cooperate suggests a recognition of the need for a comprehensive review of the evidence.
The Ranch’s Present and Future
Today, the main driveway leading to Zorro Ranch is marked with “No Trespassing” signs. A memorial, featuring signs, pictures, and crosses, stands near the entrance, a somber reminder of the alleged crimes that took place there. The property was purchased in 2023 by a Texas real estate developer who plans to transform it into a Christian retreat.
The developer intends to rename the road leading to the property San Rafael, after the patron saint of healing. However, some, like the family of Virginia Roberts Giuffre, remain skeptical about the possibility of healing such a place. Giuffre was one of ten women who alleged they were groomed or assaulted by Epstein at Zorro Ranch; she died by suicide last year.
Ongoing Quest for Justice
The renewed state investigation into Zorro Ranch highlights the persistent demand for accountability concerning Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes. The focus on the ranch highlights the importance of thorough investigations, even in remote or private locations. Officials and victims’ families continue to seek a full understanding of the events that transpired.
The bipartisan commission’s work is expected to shed more light on the unanswered questions surrounding Zorro Ranch. As the investigation progresses, New Mexico authorities hope to provide closure and ensure that justice is pursued for all those affected by Epstein’s actions.
