Iraq War Fuels Outsider’s Surge in Key Maine Senate Race
Oyster farmer Grant Platner is surging in Maine's Senate primary, using his veteran status and anti-war stance against Governor Janet Mills. Platner leads Mills significantly in polls, despite past controversial Reddit posts. The winner will face Republican Senator Susan Collins, who is also facing pressure over her support for military action.
Iraq War Fuels Outsider’s Surge in Key Maine Senate Race
A political newcomer is drawing significant attention and large crowds in Maine, using his background as a combat veteran to strongly criticize the war in Iraq. Oyster farmer Grant Platner is running an anti-establishment campaign against two-term Democratic Governor Janet Mills in the primary.
The winner of that contest will face Republican Senator Susan Collins in a crucial Senate race that both parties see as vital. Platner has gained notice for controversial posts he made on Reddit in past years, some of which he now says he regrets.
“As I read through them, I read things that I absolutely do not agree with. I read through and I see things that words and statements that I abhore,” Platner stated.
Mills’ campaign has sought to use these past statements against him. “He has liabilities that would make him a flawed candidate, a difficult uh make it very difficult for him to win the general election,” Mills’ campaign said.
Platner Leads Mills Amidst Controversy
Despite the controversy surrounding his past Reddit posts, Platner has shown strong momentum in the race. Recent polls show him leading Janet Mills by about 30 points. This lead for a political outsider against a well-known incumbent is unusual.
“It still feels a bit surreal to tell you the truth. I mean, I we look at these margins and I’m like, that’s this doesn’t really happen. Uh political outsider up against incumbent uh you know, establishment political person who’s very well-known,” Platner commented.
The primary election is scheduled for June. However, Platner is already looking ahead to the general election in November. He has begun releasing advertisements that focus on the war in Iraq.
These ads criticize Senator Susan Collins for her support of former President Trump’s military actions. Platner argues that his focus in the Senate would be on issues affecting families in Maine.
Collins Faces Pressure Over War Stance
Platner’s campaign ads state, “Donald Trump and Susan Collins have sent us back into another war, sending billions overseas. In the Senate, I’ll focus on the wars main families are facing here at home. Freeing down costs, improving our schools, and keeping hospitals open.
I’m Graham Platner, and I approve this message.” The war’s unpopularity has put Senator Collins in a difficult position. This is especially true after she voted against several measures aimed at ending the Trump administration’s military campaign.
In a recent statement, Collins indicated she might stop supporting the war after 60 days, particularly without approval from Congress. Democrats in Maine feel they have a strong chance to win the seat this year.
However, Senator Collins has successfully defended her position against Democratic challenges for two decades. Her ability to win has made the seat a difficult target for the opposing party.
Looking Ahead
With the primary approaching, the focus remains on how Platner’s anti-war message will resonate in the general election. Senator Collins’ response to the growing opposition to the war will be critical. The outcome in Maine could significantly impact the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.
