Young Woman Shatters Racing Norms, Inspires Next Generation
Maddy Gordon, a 21-year-old phenom, is breaking speed records and stereotypes in NHRA Top Fuel. As both a driver and lead technician, she's inspiring young women to pursue careers in motorsports and mechanics.
Maddy Gordon: A New Force in Motorsports
Maddy Gordon, a 21-year-old driver, is quickly becoming a major name in motorsports. She’s not only setting speed records, reaching 300 miles per hour on the drag racing track, but she’s also breaking down barriers. Gordon is set to make her debut in the NHRA Top Fuel category, the highest level of professional drag racing. She has already made history as the 100th woman to win an officially sanctioned race.
What makes Gordon stand out even more is her role off the track. She is one of the few drivers at this elite level who also works as her own lead technician. This is significant at a time when the number of female mechanics in the U.S. is very low. Gordon is showing young women everywhere that they belong just as much in the race car pits as they do in the driver’s seat.
The Leap to Top Fuel
Gordon recently joined “Morning in America” to discuss her move to Top Fuel and the hard work involved in tuning a race engine. She admitted to feeling nervous about competing against drivers she has watched her entire life. As a third-generation driver, she grew up seeing racers like Shawn Langdon, Doug Kalitta, and Clay Millican compete.
“To be on the same ladder as them, to line up next to them, is so surreal and truly a dream,” Gordon shared. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity and said she is enjoying every moment.
More Than Just a Driver
The interview highlighted Gordon’s unique skill set. She has spent years working on her own cars, proving her deep understanding of the mechanics. When asked how she manages to be both a driver and her own lead technician, Gordon explained her passion for the sport.
“I truly love the sport. I love driving, and I love working on the race cars,” she said. “There’s so much going on and so much to learn. That’s the thing about drag racing; there’s always more to learn. You never stop learning.”
Mechanical Knowledge as an Edge
Gordon explained that while she doesn’t work on the engine during a race, she dedicates time outside of the track to learning more about engines, tools, and tuning. She recently took a flight to learn how to build a short block engine. She also mentioned using tools from a company called “Fits,” which she called a dream because she gets to use their tools on her race car.
This hands-on mechanical experience, which she calls her “mechanical DNA,” gives her a distinct advantage. Gordon started her racing career as a crew member on her dad’s funny car before moving into the driver’s seat. She believes her mechanical background helps her understand what her crew chiefs are doing when they make adjustments to the car.
“When the crew chiefs tell me they adjusted the timing or the fuel system, I understand what that mechanically does to the engine,” Gordon explained. “It’s almost like I have a glimpse into the future of what it’s actually going to do on the race car. So I’m kind of more ready for what’s going to happen out there.” Knowing how the equipment works helps her use it more effectively.
A Message to Young Women
With less than a minute left in the interview, Gordon was asked about the low number of women in the race pits and her message to young girls.
“Never dream too small,” Gordon advised. “If you say you can’t, then you can’t. But there’s also a way to make it happen. Work hard, always.” She reiterated her own journey: “I never dreamed I could get a Top Fuel car. I really never thought this would happen, but I’m living the dream. It’s here, and honestly, never dream too small.”
Global Impact
Maddy Gordon’s success is more than just a personal achievement; it represents a broader shift in sports and vocational fields often dominated by men. By excelling as both a driver and a technician, she challenges traditional gender roles. Her story inspires young women to pursue careers in areas like motorsports, engineering, and mechanics, fields where women are significantly underrepresented. As she competes at the highest level of drag racing, Gordon provides a visible role model, encouraging a new generation to overcome perceived limitations and pursue their ambitions, regardless of gender.
