WNBA Stars Secure Historic CBA Deal
WNBA players are celebrating a historic new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) after intense negotiations. The deal includes the largest salary jump in sports history and full-time maternity leave, aiming to create generational wealth and opportunity for players.
Historic Deal Reached: WNBA Players Celebrate New CBA
WNBA players are walking out of negotiations with their heads held high after securing a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that is being called “historical.” This new deal promises to change the game for female athletes in the country, offering opportunities for wealth and financial security that players, both current and former, have never seen before.
Breaking Down the New CBA
The negotiations were intense, lasting eight days, but the outcome is a landmark agreement. Breanna Stewart, a key figure in the talks, expressed immense pride in the work done by the players’ association, the league staff, and the WNBA itself. “We really came to an agreement and a CBA that’s going to be historical,” Stewart stated. She believes this deal will create “generational wealth” and, more importantly, provide the “opportunity for wealth for all of the players in our league and for those that had came before us.”
Several key elements make this CBA a major win for WNBA players. It includes the largest salary jump in sports history, ensuring players are compensated more fairly for their talent and dedication. A significant achievement is the provision for full-time maternity leave, recognizing the importance of family and supporting players through major life events. The deal also ensures a one-time payment for retired players, offering some financial relief to those who paved the way for the current generation.
Stewart highlighted the difficulty of the negotiations, explaining that achieving a “transformational CBA” required addressing many issues. “Making sure that we were going to have a onetime payment to former retired players, making sure that we were going to have a salary increase, making sure we were going to still have housing for all,” she said, listing just a few of the many improvements. The negotiating team’s commitment was unwavering. “I thought that our team, we did an incredible job negotiating and really never giving up until we we got exactly what we wanted,” Stewart added.
A Partnership for Growth
With the agreement in place, the focus shifts from negotiation to collaboration. The new CBA establishes a partnership where the league and its players are working together. “We’re getting 20% of of all revenue,” Stewart explained about the revenue sharing agreement. This partnership means that “when it’s good for the WNBA, it’s good for the players and vice versa.” This shared success model is crucial for the continued growth and prosperity of the league.
From Past to Present: A Look at Legacy
The conversation also touched upon the personal connections within the WNBA, highlighting how the league’s history is intertwined with its present. Stewart shared a moment reflecting on her wife, Marta, and her connection to fellow player Allison Feaster. Feaster’s daughter, Sarah Strong, is now a player herself, a full circle moment that Stewart found “amazing.” She recalled seeing a young Sarah running around courts in Spain nearly 15 years ago while Feaster was playing there.
Remembering Allison Feaster’s Impact
Stewart spoke about Allison Feaster’s qualities as a player and teammate. “Tough mentality. I remember her being being a great teammate,” Stewart said. She recalled Feaster’s kindness, especially when Stewart was younger and learning English. “She will check on me. I didn’t speak English at that time, so she will speak to me in Spanish, make make the effort to like make me feel good.” This supportive attitude is something Stewart sees echoed in Sarah Strong’s approach.
“I like Sarah’s mentality,” Stewart commented. “She came to Yukon for for a thing and to win. And I think that’s Alison’s mentality.” This connection between past and present players, marked by shared values and a drive to succeed, underscores the enduring spirit of the WNBA.
The new CBA represents a significant step forward, not just for the current players but for the future of women’s basketball. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved, promising a brighter and more prosperous future for the league.
